HS2, Britain’s new high-speed railway is at peak construction. Balfour Beatty VINCI is HS2’s construction partner in the Midlands, responsible for delivering 90km of the route, from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.

Reporting to the MEP Design Manager, the MEP Deputy Design Manager will play a key role in the coordination, development and assurance of MEP design packages, ensuring they are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with programme, budget and quality requirements. You will collaborate closely with designers, consultants, construction teams, suppliers and key stakeholders to ensure design solutions are technically robust, buildable and aligned with project objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the management and coordination of MEP design activities from concept through to construction and commissioning.
  • Assist in the delivery of design packages in accordance with programme milestones and project requirements.
  • Coordinate interfaces between MEP, civil, structural, architectural and rail systems disciplines.
  • Review design submissions to ensure compliance with project specifications, standards and statutory requirements.
  • Support design assurance, verification and approval processes.
  • Participate in design reviews, risk workshops and value engineering initiatives.
  • Monitor design progress and assist in the resolution of technical issues and design-related challenges.
  • Collaborate with construction and delivery teams to ensure designs are practical, efficient and buildable.
  • Support the management of design changes and configuration control processes.
  • Maintain accurate design records, reports and documentation.
  • Engage with clients, consultants, subcontractors and stakeholders to facilitate effective communication and decision-making.
  • Experience working within MEP design, design coordination or engineering management roles.
  • A strong understanding of mechanical, electrical and public health building services systems.
  • Experience supporting multidisciplinary design teams on major construction or infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of design management processes, risk management and design assurance procedures.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.
