Job Description

Location: London

Salary: Base salary: £41,750 pa to c. £49,100 pa depending on skills and experience. In addition, we offer a flexible benefits fund of 15% which is paid on top of the base salary and is fully pensionable, as well as a range of competitive benefits.

As a Climate Change Specialist at HS2, you will provide specialist technical support on climate change adaptation & resilience management for all phases of the project. You will work in collaboration with the supply chain as well as HS2 colleagues to ensure project commitments relating to climate change are delivered and timescales are met with value for money at the forefront of all decisions. The role will include working with a wide range of stakeholders including contractors and government decision and policy makers.

About the role:

  1. Actively promote and embed Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in all your work, and support and comply with all organisational initiatives, policies and procedures on EDI.
  2. Support the Climate Change Manager in development and implementation of climate change adaptation & resilience management requirements.
  3. Develop and implement procedures, tools and systems as appropriate to ensure climate change requirements are clearly defined and well understood and to enable effective and efficient delivery of climate change adaptation & resilience objectives.
  4. Provide technical assessment and reviews for the hybrid bills and associated tasks, including Environment Statements, Petitioner responses and Parliamentary Queries.
  5. Work with delivery teams in providing support and specialist climate change management and reduction expertise.
  6. Participate in the Environment team’s wider objectives and work closely with them to achieve climate change objectives. Provide technical assessment and review to assure that deliverables meet the project’s climate change requirements.
  7. Represent HS2 at climate change technical meetings with stakeholders as required.
  8. Engage pro-actively with internal and external stakeholders.
  9. Work with delivery teams to ensure consistency of approach, promote best practice, innovation and value for money.
  10. Continue to develop professionally, maintaining technical competencies and identifying opportunities for learning new skills in order to meet work objectives more effectively.

About You:

Skills:

  1. Ability to communicate effectively with technical specialists, non-technical project managers and technical stakeholders.
  2. Ability to technically assess and review climate change management deliverables submitted by contractors.
  3. Be able to review parliamentary submissions as part of the hybrid Bill & petitioning process.
  4. The ability to provide technical responses to Parliamentary Questions and Freedom of Information requests.

Knowledge:

  1. Suitable qualifications to degree standard, or experience and education to demonstrate a good understanding of climate change adaptation & resilience principles.
  2. Knowledge and understanding of the relevant legislation, technical guidance, industry standards and best practice in relation to climate change adaptation & resilience.
  3. Memberships of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment and understanding of the relevant legislation, technical guidance, industry standards and best practice in relation to climate change adaptation & resilience.

Type of experience:

  1. Experience of implementing climate change adaptation & resilience principles within complex and medium to high risk projects.
  2. Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams.
  3. Experience of delivering successful outcomes with complex stakeholders.
  4. Experience of working with subject matter experts relevant to the role, including contractors and consultants.
