Base salary: £61,622 pa to approx £77,028 pa depending on skills and experience. In addition, a flexible benefits fund of 20% is paid on top of base salary and is fully pensionable.
Role Overview: Senior Environment Manager EK at HS2 is responsible for leading the Integrated Project Team (IPT) and ensuring design and construction meet organisational, sponsor, and environmental commitments, as well as all relevant law and regulations.
- Overall accountability for leading environmental technical assurance in the IPT, producing, checking and submitting assurance evidence for technical stage gates.
- Support the Head of Engineering and Environment in coordinating the environmental element of HS2 risk‑based technical assurance.
- Work as part of an integrated team with specialists and contractors, liaising with technical stakeholders and statutory bodies to develop cost‑balanced mitigation strategies.
- Authorise mandatory approvals by ensuring contractor designs and construction work comply with Environmental Minimum Requirements (EMRs), focusing on the General Principles and the CoCP.
- Support the efficient handling of enquiries, including Freedom of Information and Engineering Information Requests, ensuring statutory requirements are met.
- Lead management and communication of HS2 Environment & Sustainability requirements to the IPT, ensuring that environmental sustainability remains embedded in design and construction.
- Provide guidance alongside technical specialists to achieve high‑quality integrated designs and develop mitigation strategies.
- Support the Head of Engineering and Environment with internal and external reporting of environmental matters.
- Ensure requirements are developed timely, collaborating with the Client and central Environment team.
- Liaise with technical stakeholders at various forums and with the local community on sensitive issues.
- Actively promote and embed Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in all work and comply with organisational initiatives, policies and procedures.

- Membership of a professional institution or equivalent Chartered Environmentalist experience.
Experience:
- Managing multi‑disciplinary engineering and environmental standards on large complex infrastructure projects.
- Managing competing project demands with cost and schedule implications.
