Property Counsel | HS2 | Birmingham (Hybrid)
Build Britain’s Future and Leave a Lasting Legacy
HS2 is Britain’s new high-speed railway, a project transforming connectivity between London, the Midlands, and the North. As one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe, we are creating thousands of jobs and building a legacy that will serve the nation for generations. We are seeking a qualified solicitor to join our specialist property team with a focus on utilities and statutory undertaker work.
This is not a typical property role; it sits at the unique intersection of law, infrastructure, and large-scale project delivery.
The Opportunity
- Managing a diverse and complex caseload across fields, industrial parks, and railway land.
- Drafting and negotiating easements, wayleaves, and leases with statutory undertakers in the gas, water, electricity, and telecommunications sectors.
- Handling legal agreements and processes for utilities and telecoms to facilitate railway construction while protecting HS2’s interests.
- Working collaboratively with internal stakeholders, including land, property, utilities, and third-party agreements teams.
- Managing external legal support, including oversight of quality control and budgets.
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for a qualified solicitor with property law experience who can manage their own caseload independently. Key attributes include:
- Strong drafting skills and high attention to detail.
- Excellent negotiation and influencing skills, with the resilience required for complex stakeholder negotiations.
- The ability to balance multiple priorities and meet strict deadlines.
- A pragmatic approach to problem-solving, often without established precedent.
- A collaborative mindset and the ability to embrace evolving challenges.
Why HS2 is Different
- Unrivaled Complexity: Gain broad experience across multiple utility sectors and property types on a project of national importance.
- Career Stability: This is a long-term role with at least a decade of work ahead as we complete Phase One and transition to operational management.
- Professional Growth: Your work will evolve as the project matures, offering continuous challenges and development opportunities.
- Meaningful Work: Be part of a supportive team of smart, capable colleagues working to leave a positive legacy for future generations.
Compensation and Benefits
- Total Package: Up to £65,514.
- Base Salary: £46,406 – £54,595 per annum.
- 20% Flex Fund: An additional fund on top of your base salary that can be taken as cash or used for benefits such as private healthcare and gym memberships.
- Enhanced Pension: HS2 contributes 10% when you contribute 5%.
- Work-Life Balance: Hybrid working with 3 days per week in our Birmingham office and a flexible approach to support work-life integration.
