Location: Podium, Euston London

Salary: Base salary £59,268–£69,727 per annum, depending on skills and experience. We also offer a flexible benefits fund of 20% on top of base salary, fully pensionable, plus a range of competitive benefits.

Job Purpose

We are looking for two Project Managers to work within our Rail Systems Delivery Teams. As a Project Manager at HS2, you will be responsible for the successful delivery of the contract(s) to time, budget, scope, and quality. Experience as a Project Manager within Rail is preferred.

About The Role

  • Provide project management support to one or more of the Rail Systems Senior Project Managers / Heads of Delivery for their allocated project.
  • Support the successful delivery of Railway Systems objectives and outcomes.
  • Interface with relevant Railway Systems stakeholders for the project, as required.
  • Support monitoring of changes generated from the Construction/Delivery teams, including scope and cost changes, and escalating issues to the Senior Project / Project Manager as required.
  • Support robust reporting on progress of project deliverables to the Senior Project Manager/Head of Delivery and the Railway systems programme at any required forums, on a routine and ad‑hoc basis.
  • Support the Senior Project Manager/Head of Delivery to ensure project plans are developed, maintained, and analysed to identify and mitigate delivery risks.
  • Support the Senior Project Manager/Head of Delivery in identifying and implementing mitigating actions to address potential milestone slippages and escalating issues as required.
  • Actively engage with the integrated HS2 team, matrixed team members, and any agency staff or consultants, providing day‑to‑day coordination to deliver project and/or contract requirements on schedule.
  • Manage the package contractor(s) to ensure successful delivery of the project to time, budget, scope, and quality.
  • Ensure the project is successfully integrated with other related HS2 and Network Rail projects.
  • Undertake the duties of the Project Manager under an NEC3 contract.

Skills

  • Project management: ability to develop, plan and integrate projects to optimise target costs and benefits.
  • Problem solving: identify problems and review related information to evaluate options and implement solutions, including managing and planning multiple workstreams and balancing stakeholder demands, cost, time, and quality.
  • Decision quality: identify necessary information, gather and synthesise data, facilitate identification of options, and apply judgement based on logic and reason.
  • Clear direction: analyse inputs, assess data, define strategies, and document supporting rationales.
  • Influencing and negotiating skills – including with internal functions and external supply chain partners.

Knowledge

  • Project management knowledge aligned to APM Project Manager level.
  • Understanding of risk identification and management.
  • Understanding of project schedule management, dependencies, and risk assessment.
  • Understanding of the complexities of delivering projects with multiple interfaces.
  • Degree level qualification or equivalent NVQ in project management, engineering, commercial management, or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of railway systems is advantageous.

Types of Experience

  • Experience managing high‑value, complex projects.
  • Experience of the full project lifecycle from pre‑contract award through to design, installation, testing, and commissioning.
  • Experience working across functions and disciplines to deliver objectives.
  • Experience managing people directly and in a matrix environment.
  • Experience managing delivery through external contractors and/or suppliers.
