HR Wallingford’s Equipment, Technology and Innovation Group is a small to medium, high‑expertise team that develops and supplies a comprehensive range of physical modelling technology for hydraulic, marine and coastal research facilities. We supply equipment to more than 300 institutions worldwide, including wave generation systems, absorbing beaches, tidal generators, towing carriages, instrument positioning systems, force measuring equipment, dynamometers and remote platforms. Alongside delivering world‑class engineering solutions, you will help develop and capitalise on new, innovative technologies to enhance our product portfolio and support the organisation’s growth in strategic markets.

About the role

The role is UK‑based (in either our Wallingford or Manchester office) and involves supporting the design, manufacture, installation, commissioning and support of HR Wallingford’s specialist equipment for hydrodynamic modelling laboratories.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake electrical engineering design, analysis and calculations to underpin our equipment designs.
  • Participate in design reviews and recommend design modifications to improve functionality, reliability and manufacturability.
  • Produce electrical schematics for detailed design and manufacture.
  • Review and approve electrical schematics.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams (mechanical, software, project management) to ensure successful project completion.
  • Provide support to the BD/Customer Support team.
  • Support development of concepts and design solutions for new technology, including planning, testing and validation activities.
  • Produce technical reports, specifications, user manuals, maintenance guides and other technical documentation.
  • Liaise and build relationships with key suppliers of electromechanical products.

Qualifications

  • Experience designing high‑power (mains voltage, high current) electrical distribution, switching or actuation systems for harsh environments.
  • Experience designing electrically driven actuation systems for harsh environments.
  • Knowledge of relevant UK and international regulatory standards followed within designs.
  • Proficiency in design CAD and drawing version control software.
  • Right to live and work in the UK.
  • Willingness to travel abroad.
