Location: Manchester and Wallingford, United Kingdom. HR Wallingford's Equipment and Technology Division designs and supplies physical modelling technology for hydraulic, marine and coastal research facilities. With over 70 years of experience, we provide wave generation systems, tidal generators, and more.

About the role

We are recruiting two Graduate Mechanical Design Engineers. This full‑lifecycle design engineering role spans initial concept, detailed design, prototyping, testing, installation and commissioning. You will collaborate with cross‑functional teams, produce technical documentation and 3D CAD models, participate in design reviews, and support commissioning and customer support.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design, analysis, and testing activities for mechanical systems.
  • Create and review 3D CAD models (Creo or SolidWorks) and technical drawings.
  • Participate in design reviews and coordinate with suppliers.
  • Support prototype fabrication, testing, and installation.
  • Assist in commissioning and provide customer support.

Qualifications

  • Strong academic background in Mechanical Engineering or related field; a degree preferred.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software (Creo or SolidWorks) and confidence in creating and reviewing designs.
  • Knowledge of GD&T, limits & fits, and designing for manufacture.
  • Understanding of core mechanical principles: mechanics, dynamics, material properties.
  • Desirable: experience with electric motors, rotating machinery, mechanical drive or actuation systems, bearings, seals, and submerged environments.
  • Hands‑on experience in fabrication, construction, or commissioning phases is valued.
