This role presents an exceptional opportunity to lead the L&D function across both London and global offices. The position is a senior strategic appointment, requiring close cooperation with the Chief People Officer, senior Partners, and key stakeholders worldwide, as well as the management of the L&D team.

The successful candidate will assume strategic and operational responsibility for the firm’s L&D infrastructure, encompassing the design, development, and delivery of a comprehensive global learning and development program, including technical/legal, management, and core skills training. This opportunity is ideal for an accomplished L&D leader seeking a new challenge, with consideration given to individuals currently operating at this level as well as those aspiring to advance from a deputy position. Demonstrable senior-level experience within L&D at a commercial law firm is essential. International and multi-office expertise is highly desirable.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide strong, decisive, and creative leadership, and strategic guidance to the L&D team.
  • Oversee key leadership and management skills programmes for the solicitors, serving as the primary contact for programmes globally.
  • Deliver executive coaching and mentorship to senior leaders and high-potential employees, promoting a culture of continuous learning and development.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders including Training Partners, Knowledge Management, Human Resources, and Heads of Business Services to assess and address current and future training requirements, working internationally on both global and local projects.
  • Develop and sustain relationships with external training providers, industry bodies, and academic institutions to elevate the firm’s L&D offerings.
  • Evaluate and negotiate terms with providers, venues, and courses, maintaining an up-to-date contacts database.
  • Work collaboratively with Knowledge Management to deliver a structured technical legal training curriculum through internal and external resources, ensuring that all training meets rigorous standards.
  • Supervise the development and implementation of mandatory training programs, fostering relationships with internal contributors to facilitate rollout.
  • Represent the firm actively at events and broader networking activities within legal training consortia.
  • Coordinate with the Early Careers team to support all aspects of the trainee cycle, from induction to qualification, providing guidance throughout the recognised training period.
  • Oversee the global L&D budget, including monthly forecasting and expenditure monitoring, and identify cost-effective approaches to training provision.
  • Lead and develop the L&D team, offering direction, support, and opportunities for professional growth.
  • Guide significant initiatives such as learning management system implementation and mentoring programme development.
  • Proactively pursue and implement innovative practices and technologies within L&D to further strengthen the firm's learning culture.
