Behind every great exhibition is someone who makes it work. We are looking for a practical, detail driven Museum Technician to play an important role in bringing exhibitions to life, protecting our collections, and keeping the museum running smoothly. This role is hands-on and sits at the heart of the organisation, combining technical skill, problem solving and teamwork to support exhibitions, collections care, building operations and the visitor experience.
What you will do:
- Support the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions, including mounts, cases and object handling
- Help care for and monitor collections, displays and gallery equipment
- Maintain the museum environment (temperature, humidity, lighting) to the highest standards
- Oversee building maintenance, security systems, and contractor works
- Take a lead on health & safety procedures and staff training
- Support commercial venue hires and special events
- Help ensure a welcoming, well-maintained visitor experience
- Act as a keyholder and provide weekend cover on a rota basis
Skills & Experience:
- Motivated, organised self-starter who takes ownership of work and maintains high standards
- Practical, hands-on experience (e.g. construction, wood/metal work, or music/event production)
- Experience working in a museum, heritage site, or visitor-facing environment
- Knowledge of collections care, object handling, packing and mount making
- Understanding of museum standards and best practice (e.g. Spectrum, Accreditation)
- Experience planning maintenance schedules and liaising with contractors
- Able to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers and external partners
- Creative problem-solver, comfortable working to deadlines and budgets
- Professional, inclusive and open to learning and feedback
- Passion for music, particularly G.F. Handel and/or Jimi Hendrix
- Relevant qualification such as a Level 3 Museums & Galleries Technician Apprenticeship (or equivalent) is desirable.
About us:
Handel Hendrix House is a unique music museum in Mayfair, London, celebrating the lives and legacies of two of the most influential musicians in history, Baroque composer George Frideric Handel and rock legend Jimi Hendrix, who happened to live next door to each other, centuries apart. Visitors can explore Handel's beautifully restored Grade I Listed home, dating back to the 18th century, where he wrote and rehearsed many of his greatest works, and also there is the adjoining flat where Hendrix lived, worked and jammed during his time living in London.
