Responsibilities

An exciting opportunity has arisen for four Apprentice Engineers to join our team, operating on a day shift.

Successful candidates will complete a structured rotation across four key departments, gaining broad experience and developing core engineering skills throughout the programme.

  • Product Engineering
  • Process Engineering
  • Layout
  • Toolroom

Most of the apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work:

  • Develop a broad technical understanding of the manufacturing processes at Howmet
  • Learn ways of using data to troubleshoot and optimise processes
  • Help identify manufacturing issues and how to resolve them
  • Produce customer facing reports detailing conformance to engineered drawings and models
  • Develop an understanding of tools used in the industry and basic toolmaking skills to help maintain them
  • Follow work processes and safety standards closely to ensure a safe working environment
  • To be committed in working towards achieving the competencies set out in the apprenticeship standards
  • Maintain an apprenticeship training record to be produced when required

Qualifications

Person specification:

  • An interest in engineering as a subject and the desire to learn and develop

  • Experience of engineering activities are advantageous but not necessary. This may include:

    • Hobbies or voluntary work

    • Previous work experience

    • Engineering related school subjects

  • Able to demonstrate a commitment to personal learning – this could include a hobby, project, or additional qualification

  • Able to adapt with a proactive approach to ways of working

  • Willingness to work as part of a team

How does the apprenticeship work?

Provider: South Devon College

Qualification: Level 3

Duration: Approx. 42 months

Start date: The next start date will be September 2026; however, the successful candidates could join Howmet prior to September to begin to build a meaningful portfolio of evidenced learning
