Contract

Permanent or contractor opportunity

Howlett Brown is looking for a Senior Employee Relations Advisor to join our Advisory team and support high-quality client work across employee relations, HR advisory, workplace investigations and people-risk matters.

Howlett Brown is a people intelligence company supporting organisations to build fair, inclusive and purpose-led workplaces while reducing people-related risk.

We advise clients across investigations, legal and HR advisory, employee relations, culture, DEEI, training, conflict resolution, communications, business intelligence and independent speak-up services.

As the first people intelligence company in the UK regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, we work at pace on complex, deadline-driven client matters.

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to meaningful work in a collaborative, thoughtful and learning-focused team environment.

About the role

This is a hands-on advisory role for someone with strong practical employee relations experience, sound judgement and the ability to support clients through sensitive, complex or time-pressured workplace matters.

You will work closely with the Head of Advisory and the wider team to manage allocated workstreams, prepare clear and practical advice, support workplace investigations and contribute to consistent, high-quality client delivery.

The role is suited to someone who can work at pace, manage competing deadlines, build trust with clients and colleagues, and remain calm, professional and solutions-focused when advising on sensitive people issues.

  • What you’ll be doing
  • Providing practical, risk-aware ER and HR advisory support across grievances, disciplinaries, performance concerns, sickness absence, workplace conflict, restructures and other sensitive people matters.
  • Supporting workplace investigations, including planning, evidence review, interview preparation, note-taking, drafting, issue analysis and quality assurance.
  • Preparing clear written advice, reports, case summaries, meeting notes, recommendations and client-facing materials.
  • Managing allocated workstreams with strong attention to detail, clear communication and timely delivery.
  • Identifying legal, cultural, behavioural, reputational or operational risks early and escalating appropriately with proposed next steps.
  • Building trusted relationships with client stakeholders while maintaining professionalism, discretion and responsiveness.
  • Contributing to templates, guidance, processes and knowledge resources that improve quality and consistency across the Advisory function.
  • What we’re looking for

We are interested in hearing from experienced ER, HR advisory or people-risk professionals who can bring confidence, care and practical judgement to complex client work.

  • Strong practical employee relations experience, including sensitive or complex casework.
  • A clear understanding of UK employment law principles and the ability to apply them pragmatically.
  • Experience supporting senior stakeholders, clients or internal leaders with people-related risk.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce polished, client-ready work.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities, deadlines and information flows.
  • High levels of discretion, judgement, and professionalism when handling confidential information.
  • Experience in a consultancy, legal, professional services or client-facing environment would be advantageous.

What we offer

At Howlett Brown, we care deeply about every colleague’s success and wellbeing. You will have access to:

  • A supportive, curious and mission-driven team.
  • Autonomy, influence and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful client work.
  • Hybrid working, with regular office days in London.
  • Option for private pension.
  • Ongoing professional development and training.
