Howdens are currently seeking an experienced Tool Room Servicing Operator to join our team at our manufacturing site in Howden, East Yorkshire. This is a great opportunity to play a key role in the service, repair, and manufacture of in‑house tooling, supporting our production operations with precision and expertise. If you have a background as a machine operator or servicing operator with tooling knowledge, we are keen to hear from you.

Shift: 6am to 4:30pm Monday to Wednesday, 6am to 4pm Thursday. OT required as and when necessary.

Salary: £51,085.84 per annum.

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Sharpening and manufacturing PCD tooling using Vollmer EDM machines
  • Sharpening carbide circular saws using Vollmer Saw machines
  • Cylindrical grinding and surface grinding both in house and purchased tooling
  • Sharpen tooling using tool and cutter grinders
  • Assembling components and interpreting technical working drawings accurately
  • Recording production data with precision and maintaining high standards of workmanship
  • Conducting detailed quality checks aligned with our quality control processes
  • Modifying tools and adjusting as requested by the Tool Room Manager
  • Performing machine safety checks before use and contributing to a safe, clean working environment

Qualifications:

  • A background in machine operation within a fast‑paced manufacturing or engineering environment
  • Strong understanding of CNC control systems (Vollmer software essential)
  • Experience with EDM machines for sharpening PCD tooling (preferred, but not essential)
  • Working knowledge of CNC lathes, milling machines, and cylindrical and surface grinding processes (advantageous, but not essential)
  • Ability to read and work from technical drawings
  • Track record of meeting tight deadlines and maintaining performance under pressure
  • Continuous improvement mindset and ability to contribute to tooling system development
  • Strong IT and communication skills
  • Collaborative attitude and ability to build positive relationships across departments
