Introduction to Foresight
We are currently seeking a Graduate Designer to work within our Foresight team in London. Arup’s Foresight team is a multi-disciplinary team that carries out research and delivers thought leadership on issues affecting the future of the built environment and society at large. Our work is geared towards helping our clients recognise new opportunities and solutions to complex challenges and identify ways of building resilience against future risks under varying contexts. As part of our work, we generate insight, develop strategies, engage and collaborate with high-profile stakeholders, identify and explore emerging trends, create and assess future scenarios, and much more. We work across disciplines and areas of expertise at Arup, as well as for external clients from a broad range of sectors.
The Role
Designers play an integral role in researching and delivering foresight products and services for our internal and external clients. The position of a designer will be multifaceted; it will range from design research, prototyping physical and digital concepts, visualising and testing ideas, film, interaction and exhibition work all using design tools and foresight methodologies to critically engage with ideas about the future.
An ideal candidate would be an open-minded designer, an agile and enthusiastic thinker who is not afraid to challenge the status quo. We are looking for someone who is passionate about their job and understands Arup’s commitment to sustainable development. A range of projects they were involved in should demonstrate their capability to work on multiple projects at once and to deliver assets to a high standard.
Responsibilities
- Working with a variety of stakeholders across the firm and Foresight team members to shape project briefs
- Developing high quality graphics, illustrations, videos, data visualisations and infographics for presentations, reports, websites, and marketing materials
- Using design methods for visioning possible futures, in the context of innovation – e. g. human experience, climate action, regenerative design etc
- Design research using a diverse set of primary and secondary research methods, synthesis, and the ability to communicate insights visually (e. g. ethnography, literature reviews, critical design, prototyping, co-creation etc.)
- Assisting with designing, facilitation, and synthesising workshops, both virtual and in-person
- Developing making capabilities and collaborating widely with various technical teams across Arup, working on more ambitious and holistic designed outcomes
Requirements and skills
- A bachelor’s degree is required and a master’s degree is desired in a design or a design-related field
- Strong competency in core design tools e. g. Adobe Suite
- Strong understanding of design and visual communication through graphics, interaction and/or moving image
- Confidence in working in a diverse interdisciplinary team to professional standard
- Confident, curious and critical mindset towards foresight and futures work
- Understanding of design as a tool for research and thinking
