Edward Morello, MP for West Dorset is looking for a Communications Officer to join his constituency office in Dorchester. The successful candidate will be an excellent writer with strong social media skills who is keen to help Edward communicate with his constituents as effectively as possible. Past experience in media and/or politics is desired but all highly-motivated candidates with relevant skills will be considered.
Location: Dorchester, West Dorset
Contract: Part-time, equivalent to 3 days per week. Initial 3 months duration, permanent by mutual agreement.
Key Strategic Responsibilities:
- Draft and update content for MP’s website, newsletter, letters to residents, and other communications as required.
- Create and schedule social media posts, captions, and campaigns.
- Capture, edit, and archive photos and videos for digital use.
- Attend parliamentary events, drop-ins, and local constituency engagements.
- Build and maintain relationships with local media and stakeholders.
- Support wider communications strategy in collaboration with the Chief of Staff and Parliamentary Assistant.
- Research local, regional or national issues to support Member’s work.
- Draft press comments and press releases if required.
- Liaise with local and national media to secure coverage, while building and maintaining strong relationships with journalists and key stakeholders if required.
Requirements:
- Flexibility to work outside normal hours when required.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce engaging content across a range of formats.
- Highly organised with excellent attention to detail, able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proactive, reliable, and able to work independently.
- Understanding of social media scheduling tools (e.g. Buffer & Metabusiness Suite).
- Basic graphic design, photo editing, or video creation skills.
- Aware of local and national political issues.
- Sympathetic to the values of the Liberal Democrats.
- Knowledge of the West Dorset constituency.
Additional Information:
- The role may require working outside of normal hours, including attending events with the MP.
- Upon appointment, you will be required to apply for security clearance through the Security Vetting and Pass Office.
