Hostelling is open to all. We are a non-profit charity and we take our responsibilities seriously, helping guests of all ages and backgrounds to discover and experience all that is Scotland.
Hostelling work is not easy and this is more than a job, you are an Ambassador for Scotland and you can make a difference to every visitor, no matter their age or background.
At Hostelling Scotland we all work hard as our guests experience is our number one priority, however, work is work and time off is time off. This means that you also have the opportunity to rest, relax and enjoy all that surrounds us working and living in Scotland.
As General Manager, use your leadership and team building skills to ensure that your team is working together to ensure the quality and service that your guests receive exceeds their expectations and they want to leave your team amazing reviews and tell everyone that will listen what a wonderful time they had staying in your hostel while visiting Scotland.
Day to day you will manage your team to help them be the best that they can be while running a great hostel, and therefore you are responsible for the management of your teams end to end. Don\'t worry, you report to the Operations Manager, and they are always at the end of a phone to help you, and will visit you regularly to support all the wonderful work that you and your team are doing. Remember, there will be some days you may need to muck in and support them with change overs, therefore some degree of physical fitness is required.
Income is important and we are keen for you to continue reviewing hostel services, managing bookings and putting forward proposals as to how we can increase revenue in our hostels.
Many of our hostels are not just self-catering we also provide food and drinks in our cafes or restaurants. We therefore require you to have the appropriate food safety and personal licence training, however, don\'t worry if you don\'t, we will make sure the successful candidate has all training in place as part of induction.
Here is what we think you need to be a great General Manager:
  • can provide evidence of working at manager level in hospitality or similar environment
  • can demonstrate amazing customer service skills
  • have experience of managing budgets
  • confidence directing contractors
  • strong evidence of managing teams
  • able to build great relations and be involved with the communities that surround our hostels
  • a great sense of humour and happy to work alongside the team when needed
  • able to complete and provide evidence of basic Disclosure Scotland clearance
  • able to provide evidence of right to work in the UK
  • have a UK drivers licence and own vehicle
