Vacancy: Band 6 Senior Nurse Practitioner Development Post with potential progression pathway to Band 7

Hours: 30+ per weekwith shifts worked between 8am and 6pm and approximately one weekend in four.

St Gemma’s Hospice is one of the leading hospices in the UK. The Hospice provides expert palliative and end of life care, in a quality environment, for thousands of local people each year. It’s a prominent and respected charity at the heart of the local community with a large range of specialist services to support patients, their families and friends.

This is an exciting development opportunity for an experienced nurse wishing to progress towards a Senior Nurse Practitioner role within a fabulous team. The successful candidate will be appointed at Band 6 and supported through a structured development pathway. On successful achievement of the required competencies, and subject to organisational need and funding availability, candidates may be considered for appointment to a Band 7 Senior Nurse Practitioner role.

You’ll join our Advanced Nurse Practice team, a close-knit team of four who work flexibly and support one another whilst being part of a wider multidisciplinary team. The role offers a diverse mix of clinical practice, direct patient care, teaching, learning and quality improvement activity, providing an excellent opportunity to develop advanced clinical and leadership skills within specialist palliative and end of life care.

Clinically, you will be based predominantly on the In-Patient Unit working with the Nurse Consultant, Nurse Practitioners and ward teams to deliver care to patients in our nurse led End of Life Care Beds. As part of the team, you will undertake admission assessment, develop management plans and review the care of these patients whilst also supporting their family/friends. You will be involved in the ongoing development of this service. You will also support the wider care of patients within the Hospice either directly or by supporting junior staff to deliver care. In addition to a clinical role, you will be involved in academic activity including teaching, audit and promoting evidence based practice. Non-clinical responsibilities including clinical governance and service development activity will increase as the post holder progresses in the role.

You may have experience at a senior level or be seeking to develop and enhance your leadership and clinical skills. St Gemma’s is keen to support the development of nurses who are committed and have a drive to ensure high quality care at end of life. You must be a non-medical prescriber in palliative care or committed and eligible to undertake this qualification in 2027.

You will have demonstrable experience in caring for patients at end of life and working as part of a multi-disciplinary team. You will have the courage to take on challenging situations by utilising advanced communication skills, ensure the best outcome for patients and provide support for nursing and the wider team. You will be a confident role model, leading by example, and be able to teach, support and mentor a range of clinical and non-clinical staff. You will seek to enhance the patient and staff experience with every action you undertake.

If you are a highly competent and committed nurse, who prides themselves on putting patients first, this is an ideal opportunity for you to develop your career.

St Gemma’s is committed to equal opportunities and strives to be diverse and inclusive, a place which reflects the communities we serve. We encourage and welcome applications from all sections of society as we value the different perspectives this brings.

If you are a passionate and committed individual then St Gemma’s wants you to join their team.
