As a Design Team Lead (Mechanical), you’ll provide technical leadership to our Mechanical Design team while remaining actively involved in the design and delivery of industry-leading equipment. Working closely with Project Engineers, Controls Engineers, Manufacturing and Purchasing teams, you’ll coordinate engineering activities, support technical decision-making, drive continuous improvement initiatives and help ensure successful project delivery.

  • Provide technical direction and support to the Mechanical Design team.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for technical design decisions and engineering escalations.
  • Ensure designs are safe, practical, manufacturable and compliant with customer, regulatory and business requirements.
  • Support design reviews, risk assessments and engineering problem-solving activities.
  • Promote engineering best practice, consistency and adherence to company standards.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of standard designs, engineering tools and design methodologies.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering function.

Team Coordination & Resource Planning

  • Coordinate and prioritise design activities to support project and business objectives.
  • Allocate engineering resources in line with project requirements and departmental priorities.
  • Monitor team workload and capacity, ensuring resources are effectively utilised across multiple projects.
  • Conduct regular team meetings to review priorities, progress and technical challenges.
  • Support the continued development of engineering capability and best practice within the department.
  • Promote effective collaboration within the engineering team and across other business functions.

Project Delivery

  • Monitor engineering workload, priorities and project progress.
  • Work closely with Project Engineers, Controls Engineers, Manufacturing, Purchasing and other stakeholders to ensure successful project execution.
  • Report on engineering activities, resource requirements and project status.
  • Identify technical risks and support mitigation activities.
  • Take ownership of selected projects, producing equipment designs and manufacturing documentation using 2D and 3D CAD systems.

Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with company Quality Management System procedures.
  • Ensure engineering documentation is accurate, controlled and maintained.
  • Ensure designs satisfy customer specifications and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Support compliance with machinery safety, CE/UKCA and hazardous area requirements where applicable.

Experience and qualifications/knowledge/skills

  • Proven experience in the design of bespoke machinery, process equipment, capital equipment or engineered-to-order products.
  • Strong mechanical design capability, including production of manufacturing drawings and engineering documentation.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software.
  • Experience working within a multi-disciplinary engineering environment.
  • Strong communication, organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership and coordinate engineering activities within a project or team environment.
