As a Controls Engineer, you’ll work closely with the Project Manager, Project Engineer, and the wider Project Delivery and Engineering team to design, develop, and deliver electrical and pneumatic control systems. Your work will span control philosophies, PLC-based automation, instrumentation, and system integration, ensuring our equipment meets strict technical, safety, and regulatory requirements within the Nuclear sector. You’ll play a key role in ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in line with agreed functional and technical specifications.

- Ensure that control systems are designed, installed and tested to ensure compliance with Client specifications, relevant national and international standards.
- Carry out design risk assessments in conjunction with the engineering team and determine the required control system Performance Levels.
- Controls input into production of Functional Design.
- Demonstrate that the control system design and operation is in compliance with the relevant requirements for the design and certification of safe systems.
- Demonstrate that control systems are designed in compliance with relevant harmonised standards as required for CE/UKCA marking under the Machinery Directive, Low Voltage directive, EMC Directive, ATEX etc. where applicable.
- Working with the Project Engineer to support the production of design documentation including P&ID’s/PFDs.
- Production of control & instrument drawings, single line diagrams and instrument schedules/data sheets.
- Create purchase requisitions and ensure all necessary information is provided to the procurement team including Equipment/Instrument Procurement Specifications (EPS, IPS) to facilitate identification of suppliers and procurement of panels, components and equipment.
- Liaise with sub‑contractors to ensure 3rd party design, manufacture and testing meets the specified standards and specifications.
- Produce and file documentation required as specified in the HML Quality Management System procedures.
- Provide information to Project Managers to facilitate commercial control and to ensure timelines and project key milestones are met.
- Work with the Controls Engineering team on the production and update of HML standards relating to control systems and electrical installations, including software.
- Support workshop personnel and technicians with the installation, inspection and testing of control systems including set‑up of PLCs, VSDs and instrumentation.
- Discuss technical aspects of the equipment control system with clients and their representatives, including site visits/meetings in UK and overseas.
- Work with the Project Engineer to produce documentation for Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) and Installation/Operation Qualification documentation (IQ/OQ).
- Provide relevant documentation and technical assistance and support to installation and commissioning engineers.
Experience and qualifications/knowledge/skills
- Use of AutoCAD 2D, Autocad electrical or Eplan.
- Ability to read and implement electrical & pneumatic control system drawings.
- Experience of the design of control systems for integration into machinery or other industrial systems.
- Set‑up, testing/commissioning of control systems.
- Basic knowledge and experience of working with pneumatic control systems.
- Verifying system conformance using P&IDs, FDS and GA’s.
- Review of Hardware/Software Design Specifications (FDS, HDS, SDS).
- Knowledge of the use of PLCs and HMIs in industrial automation applications.
- Using Performance Level (PL) assessments to determine the ability of safety‑related parts of control systems to perform a safety function.
- Testing of C&I components/circuits identified as having a Safety Significance.
- Experience of setup of VSDs and other programmable controllers and optimisation of process parameters.
- Identifying faults and initiating corrective actions.
- Knowledge of BS EN harmonised standards applicable to the Machinery/Low Voltage/EMC Directives.
- Knowledge of 18th Edition for Electrical Installations (BS7671).
- Experience of the design and specification of control systems and components for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (eg. ATEX) or other hazardous environments including the use of intrinsically safe circuits.
- Awareness of GAMP 5 & FDA 21 CFR part 11 – computerised systems compliance & validation for pharmaceutical manufacturing.
