Overview

We are looking for a Head Gardener to lead the development of 16 acres of mature gardens on a 3,300‑acre country estate. The gardens include terraced gardens, a lake, a waterfall, an orchard, vegetable and cut‑flower garden, Japanese streamside garden, wildflower meadow, rose garden, cottage garden, courtyard gardens, parkland and ancient woodland. A new glasshouse will soon be added alongside an existing nursery.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead a team of three under‑gardeners and robotic mowing equipment.
• Plan and deliver garden schedules, ensuring best practice and quality.
• Collaborate closely with estate owners on short‑ and long‑term vision.
• Coordinate with other estate departments to contribute produce and services to the shooting ground, village store and holiday accommodation.
• Oversee training and competency development for the garden team.

Qualifications

• Level 3 horticultural qualification (or equivalent) preferred.
• Proven experience as a professional gardener on private or historic estates.
• Strong plant knowledge, interpersonal skills, and a genuine can‑do attitude.
• Integrity and judgement to lead and develop a team.
