The Horniman is looking for a driven, talented and self-reflective Formal Learning and Engagement Officer to join our award-winning team. Our Formal Learning and Engagement Officers are integral to the delivery of our busy Learning Programme and partnerships with local schools.

In this role, you will co‑develop and facilitate learning workshops up to 4 days a week for learners from EYFS to post 16. You will also lead on our growing secondary school programme, projects and partnerships.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver high‑quality hands‑on, accessible workshops for school and home‑educated learners from EYFS to Post‑16, using the Horniman’s Handling Collection and Gardens spaces.
  • Develop, programme, manage and deliver our secondary school offer, proactively improving it in response to evaluation and consultation, and advocating for this audience internally.
  • Nurture and further build sustainable partnerships with local secondary schools, working with our fundraising team to support and expand our careers offer into the future.
  • Work with colleagues to evaluate and redevelop our workshops and resources in partnership with audiences and communities and against our Formal Learning Principles.
About You

We are looking for someone who shares our passion for demystifying museums, connecting learners to the natural world, dedication to decolonising the curriculum, and commitment to community‑led practice. At the heart of your work must be the drive to create equitable access to museums for children and young people.

Key Qualities, Skills, and Experience
  • Significant, proven experience delivering learning workshops to groups of school learners in a museum, gallery, or community setting.
  • Proven experience working with secondary school learners.
  • Experience using objects and/or museum collections to support learning.
  • Experience working in consultation and/or partnership with schools and wider organisations to co‑create or co‑produce projects and content.
  • Knowledge of learning schemes and approaches used in secondary school settings.
  • Able to effectively manage multiple programme streams simultaneously to meet deadlines, prioritising work in a systematic fashion.
  • A demonstrable commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion.
