We are looking for 2 Maritime Trainee Apprentices to join our team and gain hands‑on experience operating vessels on the iconic River Thames. This apprenticeship offers the chance to earn while you learn in one of London’s most unique working environments.
City Cruises UK operates public dining and sightseeing cruises, as well as private charters for corporate events, birthday parties, weddings and other special occasions across London and York. This apprenticeship is a minimum of 2 years, during which you will learn to operate, maintain and navigate a vessel on the River Thames and progress towards a long‑term career in the maritime tourism industry.
Key Responsibilities:- Complete all required training to fulfil the apprenticeship requirements.
- Take responsibility for personal learning.
- Learn and apply best practice when operating our vessels and obtain all relevant qualifications, knowledge and skills to successfully obtain a BML.
- Comply with Company SMS regulations and assist the Captain in ensuring these regulations are followed by all onboard.
- Assist the Captain with onboard safety training and conduct a crew safety briefing every morning before service to the public.
- Ensure vessels meet Company safety standards so passengers remain safe and enjoy their experience on the River Thames.
- Navigate vessels on the River Thames safely in accordance with the Company passage plan, PLA bylaws and directions from the Captain.
- Support safe mooring of the vessels at all times in accordance with the Company’s SMS.
- Provide a vessel safety announcement after leaving each pier to comply with Company SMS.
- Account for and safely embark and disembark passengers from recognised locations along the River Thames.
- Carry out daily vessel log checks in conjunction with the SMS procedures, with specific attention to safety equipment and engines.
- Report any maintenance checks or incidents as per the Company’s SMS.
- Assist the Captain in ensuring the vessel is fully stocked with fuel, water and supplies, and address any shortages before service.
- Support the engineering department with watering, bunkering, servicing duties and other ad‑hoc tasks as needed.
- Assist in vessel surveys and their preparation, ensuring that all onboard documentation and equipment is maintained and looked after.
- Keep the vessel clean, tidy and well presented at all times in compliance with Company SMS and London Port Health regulations.
- Carry out the duties of a third hand on board our vessels, particularly on charters, and maintain the workboats.
- Participate in dockings, stability tests and shipyard operations as needed.
- Provide passengers with commentary throughout the sightseeing journey and deliver an outstanding experience.
- Maintain a professional appearance and groom while wearing the Company uniform at all times.
- Attend and participate in training across all City Cruises UK locations to become familiar with Company standards, procedures and operations.
- Perform any other task set by the Operations team.
- Act as an ambassador for the company off site.
- GCSEs including English and Maths (Level 2/Grade C and above).
