COMPANY SUMMARY

City Cruises UK is part of Hornblower Group, a global leader in world-class experiences and transportation services. We operate public dining and sightseeing cruises as well as private charters for corporate events, parties, or other special occasions across London and York. Safety is our number one value, and we’re looking for an experienced marine safety professional to help lead it.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Marine Safety and Compliance Manager makes sure our passenger vessels, piers and people operate safely and within the law. You will maintain and continually improve our Safety Management System (SMS) under the MCA Domestic Safety Management (DSM) Code, lead audits and incident investigations, and be our day-to-day link with the MCA, PLA and other authorities. You will also act as Deputy Designated Person (DDP). When the Head of Safety and Compliance is unavailable, you will carry the full DP role: monitoring the safe operation of the fleet and providing the link between vessel and shore, with direct access to the most senior level of management.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Maintain and improve our Safety Management System under the MCA’s Domestic Safety Management (DSM) Code
  • Be our day-to-day link with the MCA, PLA and MAIB
  • Plan MCA surveys and audits with Engineering, and keep every vessel’s certification in date
  • Lead internal audits, incident investigations and emergency drills
  • Champion an open, just reporting culture across crew and shore teams
  • Act as London super user for our Helm compliance software
  • Ensure drills and exercises completed as planned, with lessons learned acted on
  • Act as DDP, covering DP duties during the absence, leave or unavailability of the DP
  • Occasionally cover Duty Operations Manager shifts

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

Essential

  • 3+ years in a marine safety, compliance or operational role, ideally with domestic passenger vessels
  • Hands-on experience of MCA surveys and audits
  • Working knowledge of the DSM Code, PLA byelaws, MAIB reporting and UK health and safety law
  • DP training, or willingness to complete it within 6 months
  • The confidence to challenge when safety is at stake, and to stay calm under pressure

Great to have

  • Boatmaster’s Licence or STCW deck Certificate of Competency
  • NEBOSH General Certificate or IOSH Managing Safely
  • Lead auditor or root cause analysis training
  • River Thames or other inland / coastal passenger vessel experience
  • Experience with Helm CONNECT or similar safety management software
