Norman Cornish Academy is seeking an outstanding Teacher of Physical Education to join our dedicated team and play a key role in shaping and developing an exciting, inclusive and ambitious PE offer for all our students. Norman Cornish is located in Spennymoor, County Durham and provides education for approximately 75 students aged 11-16 whose primary identified need is Social, Emotional, Mental Health and/or Behavioural Difficulties (SEMHD). The Academy joined Horizons Specialist Academy Trust in February, 2025 and has made rapid progress since joining the Trust. This has been driven by the commitment and dedication of our staff, the positive direction of our leaders and the strong support available across the Trust. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Academy. We are building on our successes and looking for someone who shares our ambition to provide the very best opportunities and outcomes for every student.
The Opportunity
As our new Teacher of Physical Education, you will have the opportunity to shape and develop PE across the Academy, inspiring students to enjoy physical activity, develop confidence and achieve their potential. You will be an enthusiastic and inspirational practitioner who has high expectations of both students and yourself. You will bring energy, creativity, perseverance and resilience to the role, alongside a genuine commitment to helping young people succeed.
- Have a strong understanding of the PE curriculum and the ability to implement effective strategies that promote a consistent approach across the Academy.
- Have experience of teaching students across KS3 and KS4.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across the Academy and wider Trust, building on existing strengths and sharing effective practice.
- Inspire and motivate students and colleagues, contributing positively to our shared ambition of achieving excellence.
- Create engaging and inclusive learning experiences that encourage students to participate, develop their skills and recognise their own potential.
- Contribute positively to the wider life of the Academy and the development of our PE provision.
We are looking for someone who is passionate about their subject and believes that every student can achieve and succeed when given the right support, encouragement and opportunities.
Are you an enthusiastic, inspirational and energetic PE teacher looking for an opportunity to make a real difference to young people? Whether you are an ECT looking to begin your career in specialist education or an experienced mainstream teacher seeking a new challenge, we would love to hear from you. Previous experience of working with students with SEMHD would be an advantage, but not essential.
By joining Horizons Specialist Academy Trust, you will become part of a supportive and ambitious Trust committed to improving outcomes and opportunities for students with special educational needs.
We can offer
- An ambitious and proactive Chief Executive and Board of Trustees.
- An experienced and supportive team of Executive Leaders and a collegiate team of Trust Principals.
- A committed and dedicated team of cross-Trust staff and services including Finance, HR Governance, Safeguarding, Admin and IT.
- Excellent systems, structures and support to help you succeed in your role.
- A warm, welcoming Academy with a positive and supportive learning environment.
- Extensive professional learning opportunities, including individualised development and a blend of in-house and external training - both face to face and virtual.
- A modern learning environment designed to meet the needs of students with SEMHD.
- Gold status with Investors in People, reflecting our commitment to developing and supporting people.
- Silver status for Staff Wellbeing, alongside a wide range of support for your physical and mental wellbeing.
- Family friendly working policies, including Flexible Working and Special Leave, helping you achieve a positive balance between work and home-life.
This is an opportunity to join an Academy with a strong sense of purpose, a committed team and an exciting future.
