To maintain control and act as a senior fitness advisor and acting supervisor within the sports facilities at Hopwood Hall College. To assist in ensuring the facilities can function effectively and safely for both College and community usage. To ensure that all users enter the premises in accordance with laid down procedures and that a full and professional service is provided. To undertake a wide range of duties, including use of till systems and booking management systems, supervisory cover in the absence of manager/supervisor, dealing with customer enquiries, stock control, cash handling, cleaning duties, health suite duties, delivery of classes (curricular and commercial) and control of all indoor and outdoor sport facilities, and the moving and setting up of equipment as required. Including the development of enrichment programmes and initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide a welcoming, clean, safe and professional environment to all visitors, including staff, students and the general public, and participate in cleaning rota, health and safety and safeguarding checks and implementation and compliance.
  • Provide cover as Acting Duty Supervisor in the absence of the manager/supervisor in accordance with rota systems and daily duties including work experience control and safety of operations and systems.
  • Issue a safe fitness programme to each individual in correspondence with a signed health declaration, recommending appropriate exercise prescriptions and advice.
  • Deal with enquiries face to face and by telephone concerning all activities in addition to supporting the manager/supervisor in terms of contractual compliance and policy for the Sports Arena and Sports Park.
  • Perform administration duties.
  • Be responsible for the emergency evacuation protocol and its implementation in case of an emergency.
  • Carry out risk assessments to ensure safety of all users of the facility.
  • Assist in safeguarding the security of equipment, users and the building, including external areas and grass fields, by carrying out regular checks and risk assessments as directed by the supervisor or manager.
  • Ensure implementation of all safeguarding procedures are followed at all times and reported accordingly.
  • Provide first aid service as and when required to curriculum, staff and the general public.
  • Effectively demonstrate, observe and evaluate members to ensure they have safe operational knowledge of the fitness suite and its equipment; monitor students to keep them safe while training relevant to your skills and qualifications and experience.
  • Ensure continuous development and improvement of professional knowledge.
  • Provide advice and support to members/general public and curriculum, directing activities for users to prevent injury, misuse or damage to facilities.
  • Maintain and process information using both computerised and manual records and door security systems.
  • Participate in a cleaning rota as designated by the centre manager including internal and external areas and basic maintenance where necessary.
  • Check and record daily floats at start and end of shift including completion of summary sheets and reconciliation of monies in accordance with College financial regulations.
  • Control and clean all facilities including changing rooms, toilets, training rooms, grass pitches, external areas and Astroturf at the Arena and Sports Park.
  • Operate as a key holder in opening and locking up of all areas and facilities, including alarm systems and barriers.
  • Fill and control vending machines to service the College community, including stock control.
  • Deal with enquiries face to face and by telephone concerning all activities of the Arena and pavilion.
  • Provide a full reception service including all bookings, replacement of stock, operation of a computerised till and membership database.
  • Issue receipts and keys, and undertake counter sales as required.
  • Undertake in-house and other training to maintain up-to-date working knowledge of designated Fitness Centre systems and procedures, and contribute to improvements in service levels, development of the facility and promotional activities and events.
  • Assemble, dismantle and move equipment.
  • Play a full part in the life of the college and community, supporting its mission and ethos and helping in the development and delivery of enrichment programmes and/or participation.
  • Deliver practical workout sessions and support out-of-term holiday clubs, competitions and community cohesion projects as designed by the Centre Manager.
  • Any other duties of a similar level of responsibility as may be required.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Qualifications

  • Essential Criteria
  • First Aid Certificate or willingness to work towards it.
  • Recognised Gym instructor / Personal Trainer Qualification.
  • Level 3 Supervisory or similar Certification or willingness to work towards it.
  • Knowledge of databases, membership and till systems, spreadsheets, Excel and Word.
  • Competent in presenting statistics and data and assisting and/or leading a small team.
  • Desirable Criteria
  • Customer service qualification.
  • E.T.M. qualification.
  • Understanding of database systems and analysis.
  • Intermediate level IT skills; knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Leader Award and/or similar coaching qualification or any other course relevant to the position.
  • Access to transport for work at our Rochdale site.

Experience

  • Experience in provision of customer care services.

  • Advanced gym qualifications or experience.

  • Knowledge of appropriate and safe use of fitness centre equipment.
  • Knowledge of health and safety, customer care and safeguarding.
  • Knowledge of membership systems and booking management software.
  • Good knowledge of IT in a leisure environment.

  • Supervisory skills or experience in staff management or willingness to work towards it.
  • GP referral qualification or equivalent.
  • E.T.M. qualification, yoga/pilates and/or advanced personal training qualification.
  • Leadership qualification or experience of leading small teams.
  • Knowledge of promotion and marketing in a busy gym environment.
