The Registration Service plays a unique role in the local community, providing a service to a range of customers at key moments in their lives. You will utilise your excellent people skills to provide a high quality service to those wishing to attend an appointment or organise a ceremony. The role demands high standards of accuracy, attention to detail, and the willingness to work within a legal framework. Above all, it requires the ability to be sensitive and flexible to the needs of the public at life‑changing and emotional times in what can sometimes be a high‑pressure environment.

The Role

The role provides back‑office and administrative support to our registration and ceremonies teams, as well as answering enquiries from customers face to face, by phone and by email. Customers you will be supporting include those registering a birth, death, marriage or civil partnership; organising their marriage, civil partnership, vow renewal or baby naming ceremony; or becoming a British citizen. The role involves working on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays on a fixed‑term contract basis until 31st March 2027. Working hours are 08:55-16:45 with half an hour for lunch. The position is based at our Hereford Register Office at Gardner Hall on Venns Lane but includes covering our certificate office at the Town Hall on a rota basis.

About You

  • Skills and Experience:
  • Proven experience in a customer‑facing role, ideally within a registration or public service setting.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to provide clear, professional advice.
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills, including experience with data entry and managing records.
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations tactfully and professionally.
  • Experience using IT systems to manage and update records accurately.
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation and compliance with national and service standards.

We Offer

  • Salary range of £25,989 - £28,142.
  • Enrolment in the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS).
  • Clear pathways to career progression.
  • Annual leave: 31 days pro‑rata plus bank holidays, with the option to purchase an additional 10 days per annum.
  • Flexible working arrangements, including potential job sharing and part‑time hours.
  • Employee Assistance Programme with 24/7 access to support and counselling.
  • Payment of professional membership fees (based on role requirements).
  • Various retail, leisure, holiday and health benefits including savings, cashback and discounts.
