The Role

As a Visitor Experience Assistant, you will be one of the first points of contact for visitors, helping to create a warm, welcoming and engaging environment. No two days are the same, and you'll play an important role in ensuring every visitor enjoys a safe, informative and memorable experience.

Working across a variety of public-facing areas, you will actively engage with visitors, provide information on exhibitions and events, support income generation initiatives and contribute to the smooth day-to-day operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver a consistently high standard of customer service to visitors of all ages and abilities.
  • Welcome visitors, provide directions and answer queries in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Share knowledge of exhibitions, collections and events, helping visitors make the most of their experience.
  • Promote museum memberships, donations, retail opportunities and visitor services where appropriate.
  • Assist with the delivery of talks, tours, educational activities and public programmes.
  • Support group visits, schools and organised events.
  • Operate admissions, booking or EPOS systems where required.
  • Process cash and card payments, reconcile takings and follow cash-handling procedures.
  • Respond to telephone and email enquiries professionally and efficiently.
  • Help maintain the presentation, cleanliness and welcoming appearance of public spaces.
  • Monitor visitor behaviour and report any health & safety, security or safeguarding concerns.
  • Support the protection of museum collections by following operational procedures and gallery guidelines.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across visitor services and other departments to deliver an outstanding visitor experience.
  • Use Microsoft Office and internal systems to complete administrative tasks and communicate effectively with colleagues.
  • Work flexibly across a rota including weekends, evenings and bank holidays as required. These responsibilities closely reflect visitor-facing roles across the sector and focus on welcoming visitors, supporting exhibitions, promoting memberships and donations, maintaining safety, and providing engaging interpretation.

The Person

Essential Criteria

  • A minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade C or above (or equivalent) including Maths and English, together with:
    • 1 year's experience working in a customer service role within a fast-paced, public-facing environment, or
    • 2 years' experience in a customer service role within a fast-paced, public-facing environment.
  • A genuine passion for delivering exceptional customer service to a diverse range of visitors.
  • A demonstrable interest in museums, heritage, culture and engaging audiences with collections.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to explain information clearly and confidently to the public.
  • Experience working effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Strong self-motivation, initiative and a proactive approach to customer service.
  • Good IT skills including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and Teams.
  • Availability to work a flexible rota including weekends, evenings and bank holidays.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience working in a busy visitor attraction, museum, gallery, tourism or heritage environment.
  • Additional skills or experience in areas such as:
    • Foreign languages
    • British/Irish Sign Language
    • Tour guiding
    • Storytelling
    • Drama or performance
    • Traditional crafts
    • Social history.
  • Experience using online booking, admissions or retail till systems.
  • Previous cash handling and reconciliation experience.
  • Experience delivering talks, tours or visitor activities.
  • Experience encouraging visitor donations or membership sales.
