We are seeking a Heritage Researcher to support a client's programme focused on preserving local history and connecting communities with their heritage. The post holder will play a key role in researching, documenting, and interpreting historical material to inform project outputs, including the development of driving and walking trails. You will conduct original research, collaborate with local partners and community groups, and produce high-quality written and visual content to enhance public understanding of the area's heritage.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of the client's heritage programme, contributing to cultural and community development initiatives.
  • Develop and implement a series of themed trails, identifying key sites and stories for inclusion.
  • Conduct detailed historical research on sites, buildings, landscapes, communities, and areas of interest.
  • Analyse historical maps, databases, photographs, census data, and other records to support research.
  • Engage with community and heritage groups, stakeholders, and local representatives to gather heritage stories.
  • Develop content for printed, online, and narrated formats, ensuring accuracy and quality.
  • Assist with research at local archives, contributing to the development of heritage hubs.
  • Maintain a verified database of historical and cultural research.
  • Provide general administrative and clerical support to the team.
  • Contribute to team objectives with flexibility, professionalism, and a focus on maintaining a positive public profile.
  • Participate in training and development, including induction and in-service learning.
  • Undertake other duties as required to support programme objectives.

Essential Criteria

  • Postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., History, Heritage, Culture, Archaeology).
  • Minimum of 2 year's recent experience in historical or heritage research.
  • Excellent organisational, time management, and communication skills.
  • High standards of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Full current driving licence, or access to suitable transport.
  • Flexibility to work outside normal hours as required.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in the heritage, cultural, or community sector.
  • Knowledge of local history.
