Honeycomb is pleased to be partnering with Ards and North Down Borough Council to recruit a Home Safety Officer for an ongoing temporary assignment expected to continue until March 2027.

Position Details

  • Employer: Ards and North Down Borough Council
  • Contract Type: Full-Time Temporary (ongoing until March 2027)
  • Hours: Full-time (37 hours per week)
  • Salary: Band 5 - £15.52 per hour

About the Role

As a Home Safety Officer, you will play a key role in helping residents remain safe within their own homes. Working across the Eastern Area of Councils, you will visit households to identify potential hazards, provide practical safety guidance, install or distribute approved safety equipment where appropriate, and signpost individuals to relevant support services. The overall aim is to reduce preventable accidents and promote independent living within the community.

Main Responsibilities

  • Conduct home visits throughout the Eastern Area of Councils, primarily covering Ards and North Down Borough Council and Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council, with occasional travel across County Down.
  • Conduct comprehensive home safety assessments to identify risks and recommend practical solutions.
  • Inspect and test smoke alarms while providing advice on fire safety, carbon monoxide awareness, and general accident prevention.
  • Assess residents' needs and supply approved home safety equipment where appropriate, ensuring users understand its correct operation.
  • Refer residents, with their agreement, to relevant statutory, voluntary, and community support organisations, including the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service, Occupational Therapy teams, Sure Start, Good Morning schemes, and other wellbeing services.
  • Maintain accurate electronic records of each visit using the Regional Home Safety IT system and tablet technology.
  • Work independently while following Council policies, safeguarding procedures, and health and safety requirements.
  • Support wider community safety initiatives and contribute to programmes aimed at reducing accidents in the home.

Essential Criteria

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Option 1- A minimum of 5 GCSEs (Grade C or above or equivalent), including English Language; and at least 1 year's relevant experience.
  • Option 2- A minimum of 3 years' relevant experience.

Relevant Experience

Suitable experience may include:

  • Working directly with families with children under five, older people, vulnerable adults, or individuals with disabilities in their own homes or within residential, outreach, or community-based settings.
  • Health and safety responsibilities, including conducting or reviewing risk assessments and monitoring or enforcing workplace health and safety standards.

Person Specification

The successful applicant will demonstrate:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • The ability to organise their workload and work independently across multiple locations.
  • Good IT skills, including experience maintaining accurate electronic records.
  • Access to a reliable vehicle and the ability to travel throughout the Eastern Area of Councils.
