The Company

Honeycomb is delighted to be working with a well-established local government organisation to recruit a Waste Management Business Support Assistant to join its Waste and Sustainability team. This is an excellent opportunity to join a busy public sector environment, providing essential administrative and customer service support across waste management, fleet, waste operations and sustainability. The successful candidate will play an important role in supporting members of the public, internal teams, contractors and external stakeholders, while helping to ensure the smooth and efficient delivery of waste services.

The Role

The successful candidate will provide a comprehensive customer care and administrative service as part of a busy Business Support Team. The role will involve a combination of customer service, administration, financial processing, data management and operational support. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Acting as a primary point of contact for waste-related enquiries and complaints from members of the public.
  • Responding to customer enquiries by telephone, email, Live Chat and social media.
  • Taking payments and adding new customers to internal systems.
  • Assisting customers with bulky waste collection requests.
  • Providing face-to-face customer services at the main reception desk.
  • Dealing professionally with enquiries from members of the public, commercial customers, elected representatives, stakeholders and external agencies.
  • Liaising with contracted service providers to support the smooth running of household waste collections.
  • Escalating operational issues to the appropriate manager where required.
  • Providing comprehensive administrative support to the Waste Management team and senior management.
  • Maintaining databases and records, including data entry, spreadsheets, financial information and mailshots.
  • Supporting the preparation of fleet utilisation and monthly budget reports.
  • Processing invoices and carrying out data checks.
  • Receiving and processing customer payments, completing reconciliations and preparing daily reports for the Finance team.
  • Maintaining accurate records and statutory data to support reporting and Freedom of Information requests.
  • Updating and managing customer profiles and collating information to respond to queries.
  • Maintaining specialist databases and producing reports and statistics as required.
  • Supporting the administration of events, including room bookings, mailshots and catering arrangements.
  • Ensuring correspondence is produced to a high professional standard.
  • Participating in training and development activities and supporting wider departmental requirements as needed.

The Person

Essential Criteria

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A-C, including English Language and Maths, or equivalent.
  • Consideration may be given to candidates without the above qualifications who can demonstrate a minimum of 4 years' relevant administrative or clerical experience, including minute taking.
  • At least 2 years' administrative or clerical experience, including minute taking.
  • Experience working in a customer service role involving direct contact with customers both by telephone and in person.
  • Experience dealing with customer complaints and queries.
  • Good planning and organisational skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills.
  • The ability to work to a high standard with minimal supervision.
  • A high degree of discretion and confidentiality.
  • Competence in Windows and Microsoft Office applications.
  • A full current driving licence or, if a disability prevents driving, access to suitable transport to enable the duties of the post to be carried out in full.
  • Availability to work outside normal working hours when required.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience working within a Waste Management environment.
  • A recognised IT qualification demonstrating competency in IT, such as ECDL, CLAIT, OCR or RSA II Word Processing.
