Honeycomb are delighted to be working with Ards and North Down Borough Council to recruit a Home Safety Officer. This is a Temporary post.

Pay Rate: Band 5 £15.52 per hour
Hours: Part-time - 18.5 hours per week
The Role: To deliver the Home Safety Check Scheme across the Eastern Area of Councils by visiting residents in their own homes, identifying potential safety risks, providing practical advice and approved safety equipment, and making appropriate referrals to support services in order to reduce the risk of accidental injury and improve wellbeing.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Travel to private homes, using own vehicle, primarily within Ards and North Down Borough Council and Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council areas, and on occasions within County Down (collectively the Eastern Area of Councils), to deliver home safety checks.
- Carry out a full environmental assessment of the home to identify safety hazards and risks, advising residents on home safety in line with current good practice and risk awareness.
- Test smoke alarms and provide advice on the safe use of carbon monoxide detectors and other home safety equipment.
- Conduct needs assessments, provide approved safety equipment where appropriate, and ensure residents understand how to use equipment safely to reduce the risk of accidental injury.
- Make appropriate referrals, with the resident's consent, to statutory agencies (including NIFRS, Occupational Therapists) and to voluntary and community organisations such as Good Morning Call Schemes, Safe and Well projects, and Sure Start.
- Maintain accurate electronic records for each home safety visit, including data entry on the Regional Home Safety IT system, using tablet devices.
- Work independently and professionally in residents' homes while adhering to Council policies, procedures, and health and safety requirements.
- Contribute to the promotion of community safety and injury prevention initiatives as required.
Essential Criteria:
Qualifications / Experience Required:
- Applicants must meet one of the following:
- Option 1: A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above (or equivalent), including English Language, and a minimum of 1 year's relevant experience
- OR
- Option 2: A minimum of 3 years' relevant experience
Relevant Experience:
- Relevant experience must include one or more of the following:
- Experience of identifying and engaging with families with children under the age of five, older people, or vulnerable adults, including individuals with disabilities, within:
- Their own home, or Residential, community, or outreach settings
- OR
- Experience of responsibility for health and safety, including:
- Enforcement or monitoring of health and safety standards in a workplace setting.
- Undertaking and/or evaluating risk assessments
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people.
- Ability to work independently and manage workload across multiple locations.
- Good IT skills with experience of maintaining accurate electronic records.
- Access to a reliable vehicle and willingness to travel across the Eastern Area of Councils.
