The Role

The Heritage Painter will join a dedicated Maintenance Team, delivering a high-quality maintenance and conservation service across two major sites in Northern Ireland. This full-time position (with on-call arrangements) is responsible for the preparation and application of traditional paints and finishes to historic buildings, ensuring their preservation and presentation to the highest standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and apply traditional paints and finishes including limewash, distempers, oils, waxes, varnishes, papers and fabrics
  • Carry out general decorative maintenance and associated works across the historic estate
  • Support delivery of a planned maintenance schedule under management direction
  • Record works and minor repairs using the site maintenance database
  • Procure and manage materials and supplies
  • Maintain high standards of health & safety, including contractor oversight where required
  • Ensure safe management and security of vehicles, tools, stores and materials
  • Engage positively with visitors, explaining heritage painting techniques and materials
  • Support site presentation including event preparation and contractor coordination
  • Participate in an on-call rota providing emergency maintenance cover
  • Work key activation days, including weekends
  • Undertake heritage and technical training and mentor apprentices or volunteers
  • Build productive working relationships across museum sites and departments
  • Carry out additional duties consistent with the grade and responsibilities of the post

The Person

Essential Criteria

  • Minimum of 2 GCSEs (Grade C or above) in Maths and English (or equivalent) AND 2 years' practical experience as a fully qualified painter/decorator/decorative finisher OR 3 years' previous practical experience as a time-served painter/decorator/decorative finisher
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small, multi-skilled maintenance team
  • Current valid driving licence
  • Strong communication skills and commitment to excellent customer service

Desirable

  • Experience working within a built heritage environment (e.g., listed buildings, heritage estates, museums or conservation projects)

  • Salary: £30,458 - £31,097 (EOII Grade)
