Honeycomb is delighted to be partnering with a local government organisation to recruit a Waste & Resource Management Chargehand (Recycling Centre). This role plays a key part in supporting the day-to-day operation of the Council's Household Recycling Centres, ensuring high standards of customer service, health and safety, environmental compliance, and operational performance. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced supervisor or chargehand with a background in waste management, recycling, refuse collection, street cleansing, or a similar operational environment.
The Role
As Waste & Resource Management Chargehand, you will support the Waste & Resource Management Supervisors in the day-to-day operation of the Council's Household Recycling Centres. You will provide front line supervision of operational staff, ensuring sites are safe, compliant, customer-focused, and operating efficiently. This is a temporary role for 3 months on a rota basis between Monday-Sunday. (The shift pattern is a 4 weekly rotation to include 2 weekends in the 4) This role will cover all recycling centres in the borough.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Supporting the daily operation of Household Recycling Centres
- Supervising and coordinating Waste & Resource Management Operatives
- Monitoring site performance and maintaining high standards of service delivery
- Supporting compliance with environmental, waste management, and health and safety legislation
- Assisting with the management of fleet, plant, equipment, and site resources
- Maintaining operational records and performance information
- Supporting employee attendance management and workforce planning
- Delivering inductions, toolbox talks, and operational training
- Responding to customer enquiries and complaints and promoting excellent customer service
- Participating in public awareness and recycling education activities
- Assisting with recruitment, disciplinary, grievance, and absence management processes when required
- Deputising for Waste & Resource Management Supervisors as required
The successful candidate will be expected to work flexibly across all facilities and support other Waste Management functions as required.
The Person
Essential Criteria
- A minimum of 5 GCSEs (Grades A-C) including English and Mathematics, or equivalent OR Candidates who do not hold the above qualifications must demonstrate a minimum of 2 years' relevant experience as outlined below AND A minimum of 1 year's supervisory experience within a relevant operational environment, such as:
- Refuse collection
- Street cleansing
- Household recycling centres
- Waste management operations
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision
- Working knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and safe working practices, including manual handling
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and Windows applications
- Full current UK driving licence and access to a car required. Consideration will be given to alternative travelling proposals for applicants with a disability who are unable to hold a driving licence
Desirable Criteria
- Recognised First Aid qualification
- Recognised Fire Warden training
- Certificate of Technical Competence in Recycling Centre Operations
- Experience managing employee relations issues within a unionised environment
- Current knowledge of waste management and cleansing legislation
