We’re looking for a new LGBT+ Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA) to join our IDVA service in Derbyshire. You’ll provide support and guidance to high-risk victims of domestic abuse with a focus on individuals from the LGBT+ community. We would especially welcome applications from members of the LGBT+ community to improve the representation of colleagues from these communities in our staff team.

What you’ll do:

  • Provide advice, advocacy and support to high risk victims and survivors of domestic abuse, with an agreed caseload, including face-to-face, virtual and co-located appointments.
  • Support the empowerment of victims-survivors, assisting them to recognise the dynamics of abuse present in their own situation, and to help them regain control of their lives.
  • Assist LGBT+ victims-survivors in dealing with the diverse impacts of harm and abuse (safety, emotional, social, financial, or practical).
  • Work within a multi-agency framework including MARAC, the police, health professionals, child protection, housing practitioners and other voluntary and statutory specialists. You’ll need to know how they operate and how your role fits within theirs, all while maintaining an independent role on behalf of your victim/survivor.

Who you are:

  • You’ll have a good level of education including GCSE English and maths, or equivalent.
  • You’ll have substantial experience supporting individuals on a 1-2-1 basis.
  • You can evidence self-development or formal learning and development in sector skills.
  • You have experience directly supporting adults who have experienced domestic abuse or who have other complex needs.
  • You have a formal qualification, such as IDVA, or the willingness to complete this.
  • You have a good understanding of domestic abuse, including the impact on those affected by it and the legal and practical remedies available to them.
  • You have a full UK driving licence and use of your own vehicle for work, a DBS check and are police vetted.
