Overview
Locum Dental Practitioner to cover an assignment with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) at HMS Drake Dental Centre, Plymouth, Devon. This is a locum role (23 hours per week) delivering an exceptional standard of care to MoD service personnel.
Pay and Availability
Pay rates: PAYE £48.68 per hour; Self-employed £55.98 per hour. Closing date for applications: 17 August 2026.
Main duties
- Work independently to provide a full range of dental treatment to maintain oral health and undertake related general administrative duties where required to support the dental health and operational fitness of personnel.
- Assist the Senior Dental Officer (SDO), when present, or operate independently to achieve dental fitness targets for all entitled personnel, as detailed in the SG Policy and Standards Document (P&SD).
- Ensure that not less than 6.5 hours per day in 2 sessions are set aside for direct patient contact.
- Record all treatment accurately on the electronic health record and any relevant FMed documents.

Job Responsibilities
- To work independently to provide a full range of dental treatment to maintain oral health and undertake related administrative duties as needed to support operational fitness for personnel in care.
- To assist the SDO or operate independently to achieve dental fitness targets for all entitled personnel, per policy.
- To ensure sufficient direct patient contact time (not less than 6.5 hours per day in 2 sessions).
- To ensure all treatment is recorded in the electronic health record and relevant documents.
Qualifications
- Essential: Fully registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) without restrictions.
- Foundation Training in Dentistry in the UK, or evidence of at least 12 months of full-time postgraduate clinical experience in primary dental care, or qualification prior to foundation training becoming NHS compulsory.
- Valid indemnity insurance with a recognized dental defence organisation.
- Evidence of clinical currency per JSP 950 Leaflet 4-1-4 (minimum 2 clinical sessions per week over the last 15 months).
- Completion of CPD including medical emergencies, safeguarding (children and vulnerable adults), disinfection and decontamination, radiography and radiation protection.
- Emergency and resuscitation training current and tested annually as per Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines and JSP 950 Leaflet 4-6-1.
- Health clearance checks for Exposure Prone Procedures as required by DoH policy.
- Certification for Safeguarding Children and Young People and Safeguarding Adults up to Level 3.
