Approved Electrician in Somerset

As an Advanced Electrician, you will provide a safe, high-quality electrical fault-finding, repair, testing, certification and installation service across occupied and empty homes. You will help maintain and improve Homes in Somerset properties, deliver electrical compliance requirements and ensure work is completed in line with current legislation, technical standards and organisational requirements. You will assess the scope of work, identify any additional repairs and provide clear, customer-focused advice while protecting the health and safety of residents, colleagues and the public.

You will:

• Diagnose electrical faults and carry out domestic electrical design, installation, emergency, remedial, testing and repair work to current regulations and Homes in Somerset specifications.
• Inspect occupied and empty homes, assess the electrical work required and plan work so properties are safe, compliant and ready within required timescales.
• Complete electrical certification and legally significant records accurately, identifying and reporting any additional work required.
• Undertake portable appliance testing, maintain electrical asset records and support relevant supply authority audit requirements.
• Ensure testing, calibration and safe-isolation equipment remains compliant and fit for use.
• Review relevant risk assessments and asbestos information before starting work, complete dynamic risk assessments and follow safe systems of work, including when working at height or in confined spaces.
• Use powered hand tools and undertake minor associated repairs, where appropriately trained and competent, including patch repairs, carpentry, masonry and tiling.
• Record attendance, completed work, materials and follow-on actions using mobile and electronic systems.
• Manage materials and stock for each job and coordinate with scheduling, repairs, compliance teams, contractors and colleagues to avoid delays.
• Work to service standards and performance measures, including repairs completed on time, right-first-time outcomes, customer satisfaction and personal workload targets.
• Provide a first-class service to residents, explain technical information in clear language and resolve low-level concerns or complaints within the role's remit.
• Identify and report safeguarding, damp and mould, hoarding, property condition and other risks or repairs noticed during visits.
• Contribute ideas and local intelligence to improve services, processes and customer outcomes.
• Represent Homes in Somerset positively and respond calmly and appropriately to difficult or potentially aggressive situations, reporting incidents promptly.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

• City & Guilds Level 3 electrical qualification, or equivalent.
• Current IET Wiring Regulations qualification, 18th Edition BS 7671.
• Inspection and Testing qualification, City & Guilds 2391 or equivalent, held for at least two years, with at least two years' post-qualification experience.
• At least five years' proven experience working in the electrical field.
• Experience of electrical testing, fault diagnosis and remedial work in occupied premises.
• Specialist knowledge of electrical safety, relevant machinery, tools and safe working practices.
• Knowledge and understanding of relevant health and safety and electrical legislation, regulations and guidance.
• Good written and verbal communication, customer service, teamworking and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to use Microsoft Office, handheld smartphones or tablets and electronic job-recording systems.
• Ability to interpret building plans, plan work, manage competing priorities and maintain accurate records.
• Evidence of continuing professional development.
• Five GCSEs at grades A to C, including English and Mathematics, or equivalent.
• Physical capability to undertake the requirements of the role, including the safe movement of equipment where required.

Desirable

• Experience of working in social housing, local government or a political environment.
• Understanding of other building trade roles and the wider housing repairs service.
• Membership of a relevant professional body.
• Experience of commercial electrical installations, including three-phase 415V systems.
• Qualifications or experience in portable appliance testing, photovoltaic installation and maintenance, radon-monitoring equipment, fire alarm repairs and servicing, fire stopping or Category B work.
• A relevant multi-trade maintenance qualification, such as City & Guilds Maintenance Operations NVQ Level 2.

Additional information to note

• The role involves regular travel to homes, depots and other buildings across Somerset, so the postholder must be able to meet the role's driving and travel requirements.
• Work is carried out in occupied and empty properties, offices, depots, sheltered housing and other buildings, sometimes in poor, unpleasant or hazardous conditions and in all suitable weather conditions.
• Lone working and team working are both required. The role may involve work at height, in confined spaces and around challenging property conditions.
