The Critical Care department at Homerton is a 2 unit department with state of the art facilities and improve the care we can offer to our patients. This will also support our clinical teams by providing up to date clinical environments for our teams to deliver this care.

Matron’s role will focus on :

Main duties of the job

Clinical Practice

  • Provide visible leadership to ensure the delivery of a high standard of clinical care using expert knowledge, judgement, and decision-making
  • Use expert clinical skills as a resource for staff in the full range of nursing activities from admission to discharge
  • Ensure self and staff work within the NMC Code of Conduct
  • Ensure all prescribed medications are administered and stored in accordance with local protocols and the NMC Guidelines for the Administration of Medications
  • Observe, monitor and act on any situations, e.g. the physical environment or assets that may be detrimental to the health and well‑being of the patients, visitors and staff. Ensure that strategies are in place to correct or optimise the surroundings and availability of resources

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Registered Nurse (Part 1)
  • Nationally Recognised Post registration critical care course and / or Post registration specialist course
  • Post registration teaching course / Mentorship qualification

Desirable criteria

  • Masters qualification or willingness to work towards / / Management or Leadership Qualification / / Quality Improvement Training

Skills

Essential criteria

  • Ability to lead and empower others
  • Ability to manage the service and contribute to overall strategy for the service
  • Advanced communications skills including inter-personal skills, liaison and negotiation skills, writing and presentation skills
  • Expert clinical skills within the relevant field

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Relevant experience at senior nurse level (band 7 or above) in Critical Care
  • Experienced in managing budgetary resources across a service
  • Experience of working with establishments & workforce planning experience
  • Experience of audit / benchmarking
  • Experience of successful change management
  • Evidence of practice development
  • Evidence of managing complaints / PALS

Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Evidence of demonstrable knowledge of management development and nursing policy and practice development
  • Sound knowledge of relevant critical care standards and commitment to networking
  • Demonstrate an understanding of clinical governance & quality standards
  • Workforce planning, recruitment and retention strategies

Desirable criteria

  • Demonstrates appropriate understanding of research and audit systems
