This locum Urological Surgeon role focuses on diagnosing and managing urological cancers in an elective setting, with funded potential to transition to a substantive post. The selected candidate will contribute to a fully operational outpatient and surgical service, with operating sessions locally. The department offers an electronic Advice and Guidance service for GPs, with weekly time allocated for this. The role emphasizes urological cancer diagnosis and management to meet growing demand, including running 2WW clinics, elective surgeries, leading general and MDT clinics, and participating in MDT meetings both in-person and remotely. There is also involvement in programmes to enhance care for urological cancer patients, including providing strategic guidance and redesigning care pathways, and collaboration with the cancer performance team to deliver high-quality care. Main duties of the job

The Consultant is responsible for patient care, management of departmental operations, supporting junior doctors, and handling administrative tasks. Key duties include conducting audits, teaching medical students, mentoring trainees, engaging in continuing medical education, and contributing to research initiatives to ensure excellence in patient outcomes and departmental growth.

Job responsibilities

The Consultant will play a vital role in the Urology Department, overseeing diagnosis and management of patients with a focus on 2WW diagnostics and surgical procedures. The role includes leading own clinics (general and specialist), managing operating theatre sessions (day-case and inpatient elective), in-patient care, and handling emergency cases as required. The Consultant will contribute to outpatient clinic management and the overall direction and growth of the specialty, with ongoing responsibility for patient care. Administrative duties include patient care documentation, clinic management, and departmental coordination. Active participation in medical audits and governance is mandatory. The position also involves mentoring and supporting junior doctors and medical students, contributing to teaching and skill development, and engaging in appraisal and revalidation processes. The role integrates patient care, administration, education, and professional development to advance urology in the department.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• oFRCS Urol or FEBU equivalent.
• oHigher degree – MS MD PhD or equivalent.

Registration

• oCCST or registered on GMC specialist register or within 6 months of obtaining it at the time of the interview.

Knowledge and Expertise

• oExpertise in diagnosing and managing both benign and malignant urological conditions, including proficiency in surgical techniques and emergency care.
• oUnderstanding of cancer diagnostic pathways, NICE guidelines, and evidence-based practices.
• oNHS experience in the last 1-3 years.
• oAdvanced knowledge in areas such as andrology to enhance service scope.
• oActive participation in clinical research and contributions to cancer screening and treatment advancements.

Specialty/Sub-Specialty

• oBroad based general professional training in adult urology.
• oSpecialized skills in urological oncology, focusing on diagnosis, treatment, and management of urological cancers.
• oFellowship training posts or advanced training in reconstructive urology or robotic surgery.
• oEvidence of Urology Logbook, including emergency procedures.

Training and Teaching

• oExperience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates, and junior medical staff.

Management and Audit

• oUnderstanding the principles of clinical governance and its implications.
• oExperience of audit.
