We are looking for an experienced Assistant Engineering Manager to support the day-to-day running of a busy engineering operation in High Wycombe. This is an excellent opportunity for a strong engineering leader with experience within bus, coach, HGV, PSV or commercial vehicle environments who is passionate about fleet reliability, workshop performance, safety compliance and team development. You will play a key role in ensuring vehicles are maintained to the highest standards while supporting workshop efficiency, compliance and operational performance.
Key Responsibilities of the Assistant Engineering Manager
- Support the management of a busy engineering workshop and lead the engineering team on a daily basis
- Ensure all maintenance and repair work is completed safely, efficiently and to high standards
- Work closely with Operations to maximise vehicle availability and minimise downtime
- Monitor breakdown trends and implement solutions to improve reliability and first‑time fix rates
- Maintain compliance with DVSA standards, MOT requirements and operator licence obligations
- Carry out quality inspections, audits and final vehicle checks
- Promote a strong health & safety culture across the workshop
- Support staff development, mentoring and performance management
- Assist with workshop planning, labour allocation and productivity control
- Help manage engineering costs, stock control and workshop efficiency
- Ensure all maintenance records and digital documentation are completed accurately
What we’re looking for from the Assistant Engineering Manager
- Previous experience in a supervisory or management role within a PSV, HGV or commercial vehicle workshop
- Strong understanding of DVSA compliance and vehicle maintenance standards
- Excellent leadership and communication skills
- Ability to motivate and develop engineering teams
- Experience managing workshop productivity and vehicle availability
- Hands‑on engineering background with strong technical knowledge
- IT literate and comfortable using digital maintenance systems
- IRTEC, NVQ Level 3 or equivalent engineering qualifications preferred
