We are looking for an experienced and motivated HGV Workshop Assistant Manager to support the day-to-day running of a busy commercial vehicle workshop.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced HGV Technician, Workshop Supervisor or Team Leader looking to take the next step into workshop management. You will support the Workshop Manager in ensuring work is completed efficiently, safely and to a high standard while helping to lead and develop the workshop team.

The successful candidate will have a strong HGV mechanical background, excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage workloads and priorities within a fast-paced workshop environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Workshop Manager with the day-to-day operation of the HGV workshop.
  • Assist with organising, planning and allocating work to HGV Technicians.
  • Monitor workshop productivity, quality and job completion.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to technicians where required.
  • Carry out HGV servicing, maintenance, diagnostics and repairs when necessary.
  • Ensure all work is completed to manufacturer, company and legal standards.
  • Monitor vehicle inspections, PMIs, MOT preparation and defect rectification.
  • Help manage workshop efficiency and ensure vehicles are returned to service promptly.
  • Support the management and development of technicians and apprentices.
  • Assist with performance management, training and mentoring of workshop staff.
  • Ensure accurate completion of job cards and workshop documentation.
  • Monitor parts requirements and work closely with the Parts Department.
  • Support workshop scheduling and prioritise urgent repairs and breakdowns.
  • Ensure high standards of housekeeping, health and safety and compliance.
  • Liaise with customers, drivers and other departments where required.
  • Deputise for the Workshop Manager during periods of absence.

Candidate Requirements

  • Previous experience as an HGV Technician is essential.
  • Experience working on commercial vehicles, including servicing, repairs and diagnostics.
  • Previous supervisory, team leader or workshop management experience would be advantageous.
  • Strong technical knowledge of HGV mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Experience with PMIs, MOT preparation and vehicle compliance.
  • Excellent organisational and workload management skills.
  • Ability to lead, motivate and support a team.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to make decisions and prioritise effectively under pressure.
  • Good understanding of workshop health and safety procedures.

Qualifications & Desirable Experience

  • Level 3 qualification in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair preferred.
  • HGV Class 1 or Class 2 licence would be advantageous but not essential.
  • IRTEC accreditation would be beneficial.
  • Experience using workshop management or fleet maintenance systems.
  • Manufacturer training would be advantageous.
