Field Service Engineer in Poole

I am recruiting on behalf of my client, a UK engineering business that designs, installs, commissions and services process equipment and industrial control systems for customers across the UK and internationally. With a growing order book and a busy period ahead, I am looking to recruit a Field Service Specialist (Mechanical, Electrical and Controls) to join the business on a full-time, permanent basis.

This is considerably broader than a traditional field service engineering position. As a Field Service Specialist (Mechanical, Electrical and Controls), you will combine hands-on engineering across mechanical, electrical and controls disciplines with responsibility for managing your own site projects and developing strong commercial relationships with customers.

Extensive travel is a fundamental part of the position, with approximately 70–80% of your time spent away across the UK and internationally. You will frequently work independently for extended periods on customer sites, so the ability to take ownership, solve problems and maintain exceptionally high safety standards is essential.

As the Field Service Specialist (Mechanical, Electrical and Controls), your responsibilities will include:

• Installing, commissioning, servicing and fault-finding mechanical, electrical and PLC-controlled systems.
• Diagnosing faults across control panels, field wiring, drives, instrumentation and mechanical assemblies.
• Planning and managing your own site visits and projects from preparation through to completion and handover.
• Organising parts, tools and logistics and coordinating customer teams and subcontractors.
• Supporting and running FAT and SAT activities.
• Managing schedules and keeping customers and the internal team informed throughout each project.
• Building strong customer relationships and representing the business professionally on site.
• Identifying opportunities for service contracts, upgrades, retrofits and spare parts.
• Supporting quotations and following commercial opportunities through with customers.
• Producing accurate service reports, project documentation and handover records.
• Maintaining a safety-first approach on every customer site.
• Feeding field experience back into engineering, manufacturing and continuous improvement activities.

For this Field Service Specialist (Mechanical, Electrical and Controls) opportunity, I am looking for someone with:

• At least five years' hands-on experience within field service, commissioning, maintenance or a similar customer-facing engineering environment.
• Strong practical capability across mechanical, electrical and controls engineering.
• Electrical fault-finding experience covering single and three-phase systems, control circuits and panel wiring, together with the ability to read electrical schematics.
• Experience working with PLC-based systems such as Siemens or Allen Bradley, HMIs, drives and instrumentation.
• Mechanical experience including stripping, repairing and rebuilding assemblies and interpreting mechanical drawings.
• Experience planning and running site work or small projects, including preparation, coordination, execution and handover.
• Commercial awareness and sales experience, with evidence of identifying and developing opportunities alongside technical work.
• Confidence discussing scope and commercial matters with customers.
• A strong personal commitment to safe working practices, including safe isolation and the confidence to stop work where safety is compromised.
• The willingness and ability to spend approximately 70–80% of your time travelling throughout the UK and internationally, including overnight stays and short-notice trips.
• A valid passport and full UK driving licence.
• Clear written and spoken English with strong reporting and documentation skills.

An HNC, HND or degree within an engineering discipline would be advantageous, although equivalent proven experience will also be considered. Experience commissioning capital equipment, FAT/SAT activities and managing budgets, schedules or subcontractors would also be beneficial. Recognised electrical qualifications such as 18th Edition and safety passports such as CCNSG or CSCS are preferred.
