We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead engineering capability and technical delivery across a complex, multi-site environment. This role combines people leadership, resource planning, and technical oversight, with responsibility for supporting the delivery of a portfolio of advanced engineering projects and products.

You will play a key role in ensuring the business has the right engineering capability in place, while also providing technical leadership across bids, projects, production, and research activity. Working closely with leadership, product managers, and technical leads, you will help ensure engineering output is delivered to the highest standards of quality, governance, and customer satisfaction.

This position has two main areas of responsibility:

  • Leading and developing the engineering function across the business.
  • Providing technical leadership for a specialist Portfolio Team.

You will take responsibility for engineering resource planning, capability development, design governance, and through-life product control, while also supporting strategic planning and helping remove technical blockers across the portfolio.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the engineering team across multiple sites.
  • Develop engineering capability through training, knowledge transfer, and continuous improvement.
  • Support staff development and performance management, ensuring the team remains suitably qualified and experienced.
  • Plan and allocate engineering resource based on business needs and project demand.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight across IPT activities.
  • Work with Integrated Product leadership Team to support bids, project planning, estimates, and resource forecasts.
  • Ensure engineering processes, design governance, and good practice are followed.
  • Oversee through-life product configuration control.
  • Support delivery of the portfolio on time, to quality standards, and in line with customer requirements.
  • Contribute to strategic planning across technology, engineering resources, and operations.
  • Support risk management, work definition, and team performance improvement.

Skills and experience required

Essential

  • Significant experience in a relevant manufacturing or engineering environment.
  • Strong background in through-life product management.
  • Good understanding of electrical and software disciplines.
  • Experience leading small to medium engineering teams delivering electrical and software products.
  • Understanding of systems engineering and product lifecycle management.
  • Experience with industry standards, statutory compliance, and design reviews.
  • Working knowledge of ERP, PDM, or similar configuration control systems.
  • Proven ability to drive continuous improvement and streamline processes.
  • Experience managing people, development, and performance.
  • Strong capability in task estimating and resource planning.
  • Good understanding of project and risk management.
  • Experience working with high-profile customers and stakeholders.

Desirable

  • Hands-on experience in primary engineering disciplines such as electrical or software.
  • Experience mentoring professional engineers.
  • Understanding of defence customer requirements.
  • Familiarity with electro-mechanical positioners and image processing technology.
  • Experience working in a matrix organisation.
