I am recruiting on behalf of my client for a Shift Engineer position based in Poole, working within a large-scale, high-volume manufacturing environment spanning 19 acres and housing over 5,500 assets on site. Shifts are critical: rotating shifts (days and nights), including weekends, with clear handovers required between each shift to ensure operational continuity. Flexibility to work shift patterns and overtime is essential. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Shift Engineer to join a well-established engineering function where reliability, safety, and continuous improvement are at the core of operations. The successful Shift Engineer will play a key role in maintaining production output, minimising downtime, and driving engineering standards across a complex site.

As a Shift Engineer, you will be responsible for maintaining and improving a wide range of manufacturing equipment and plant, working closely with production to resolve issues quickly and efficiently.

Key responsibilities
  • Carrying out planned, preventative, and reactive maintenance across manufacturing equipment and plant
  • Fault finding and repair to minimise downtime and maintain production efficiency
  • Supporting continuous improvement initiatives to improve reliability and performance
  • Ensuring all engineering activities are carried out safely, following permit systems, risk assessments, and isolation procedures
  • Communicating effectively at shift handovers to ensure continuity of issues and actions
  • Managing spare parts usage and maintaining accurate stock levels
  • Supporting Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Corrective and Preventative Actions (CAPA)
  • Liaising with production and other departments to ensure equipment availability for planned maintenance
  • Providing technical support, coaching, and mentoring to operators and junior engineers
  • Maintaining high GMP and housekeeping standards within engineering areas
Qualifications
  • A recognised mechanical (NVQ Level 2) and/or electrical qualification (City & Guilds Level 3 or equivalent)
  • Strong hands-on engineering experience within a manufacturing environment
  • Broad knowledge of modern maintenance techniques
  • Experience working with a wide range of production equipment
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a shift-based team
  • A proactive approach to maintenance and continuous improvement
