Quality Engineer Overview

  • Own day-to-day quality control in a fast-paced CNC machining environment
  • Drive defect prevention, NCR closure and root cause to reduce scrap and rework
  • Lead inspection discipline across first-off, in-process and final, including CMM reporting
  • Manage customer quality topics: complaints, returns, audits and quality reviews
  • Keep ISO 9001 compliance and core quality documentation tight and up to date

This Quality Engineer role works closely with the Quality Manager, production, programming and inspection teams to ensure machined components meet drawing, tolerance and customer requirements. The Quality Engineer will focus on quality system discipline, inspection control, problem-solving and continuous improvement, with clear progression available for someone who shows initiative and wants to grow in a long-term role.

Day-to-day responsibilities of a Quality Engineer

  • Ensure products meet drawings, specifications and tolerances, supporting first-off, in-process and final inspection
  • Review and approve inspection reports (CMM and manual) and support complex inspection activity when needed
  • Raise, investigate and close internal and customer non-conformances, driving actions to prevent recurrence
  • Reduce scrap, rework and returns by working with programmers and machinists to improve processes
  • Track and report key quality metrics such as scrap rates, rework and customer returns
  • Act as the main quality contact for customers, handling complaints and returns professionally
  • Support customer audits and quality reviews, ensuring evidence and actions are controlled
  • Work with suppliers on incoming quality issues and corrective actions when required
  • Maintain and improve quality documentation including FAIRs, PPAPs and control plans where applicable
  • Keep ISO 9001 compliance on track, supporting internal and external audits and maintaining controlled procedures
  • Oversee calibration discipline and measurement system reliability
  • Coach inspectors and promote a right-first-time culture on the shop floor

  • Background in quality within CNC machining / precision engineering
  • Confident reading engineering drawings and applying GD&T in inspection and decision-making
  • CMM inspection and reporting experience, plus strong understanding of manual measurement
  • Practical problem-solving capability with root cause and corrective action experience
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001 and audit readiness in a manufacturing setting
  • Comfortable communicating across shop floor teams and external customers
  • Hands‑on approach, able to balance quality control with production pace

Desirable

  • Exposure to FAIR and PPAP activity
  • MSA and SPC understanding
  • Experience in higher-spec environments (aerospace, automotive, similar)
  • Familiarity with quality systems software and ERP environments
  • Internal or Lead Auditor training
