Design Engineer Overview
- Deliver compliant design output from early concept through to technical release and site support.
- Produce accurate Revit and AutoCAD drawing packs, details, schedules and material lists.
- Coordinate technical input with internal teams and external specialists to reduce risk and rework.
- Own drawing quality, standards and documentation control across bids and live projects.
- Step up into package/project lead responsibility and mentor others where required.
This Design Engineer role reports to the Design Director and sits within an engineered product environment delivering customer-led projects from enquiry through to completion. The Design Engineer will take ownership of design output from early layouts through detailed technical release and site-stage support, ensuring designs meet relevant UK regulations, standards and client requirements. The Design Engineer will work closely with internal stakeholders across delivery and supply functions, and with external parties where needed, to keep technical information accurate, coordinated and issued to programme.
Day-to-day responsibilities of a Design Engineer
- Produce high-quality, technically accurate design solutions for enquiries and orders as a Design Engineer.
- Develop and define technical detailing with the internal team and external specialists to ensure compliance and minimise risk.
- Create and maintain Revit models and AutoCAD drawings to an approval-ready standard and agreed deadlines.
- Produce sectional, general arrangement and technical detail information, including schedules and material lists.
- Support work from early concept through detailed technical release and site-stage support as a Design Engineer.
- Interface with internal teams to align priorities, resolve technical queries and keep deliverables controlled.
- Liaise with customers and external technical parties where required to progress approvals and technical alignment.
- Ensure designs are supported by appropriate technical substantiation where required (engineering calculations and specialist sign-off).
- Maintain working knowledge of relevant UK legislation and standards and incorporate into design output.
- Consider and coordinate key performance requirements where applicable (fire protection, thermal, acoustic, structural, air tightness and energy performance).
- Develop understanding of M&E constraints and coordinate design accordingly.
- Work within the business quality process framework and support continuous improvement of design standards and documentation.
- Where required, take a lead role on a package/bid and support or mentor other designers within the Design Engineer function.
