Holt Engineering is representing a leading technology and communications organisation that is continuing to invest in its UK engineering capability. Due to sustained growth and an expanding project portfolio, our client is seeking an experienced Hardware Development Engineer to join a multidisciplinary engineering team developing advanced secure electronic systems and digital hardware solutions. This is an excellent opportunity to work across the full product lifecycle, contributing to the design, development, testing and support of both standard and bespoke electronic products deployed within highly secure environments.

The Role

As a Hardware Development Engineer, you will play a key role in the design and delivery of complex digital hardware solutions, supporting projects from initial concept through to manufacture, customer integration and ongoing product support. Working closely with software, systems and mechanical engineering teams, you will contribute to the development of innovative technologies while ensuring products meet technical, quality and customer requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of hardware design and delivery throughout the full development lifecycle.
  • Specify and design high-speed digital electronic boards for products and test equipment.
  • Design, build and validate development and production test equipment.
  • Produce schematics and support PCB layout activities.
  • Collaborate with software, systems and mechanical engineers to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Carry out hardware proving, validation and verification testing.
  • Support software and system-level testing activities.
  • Develop production and development test procedures and documentation.
  • Provide manufacturing support, including fault finding, issue resolution and training of production personnel.
  • Resolve design, obsolescence and production issues affecting existing products.
  • Support the integration of secure electronic products into customer platforms and systems.

Requirements

  • Experience delivering electronic hardware projects through the complete product development lifecycle.
  • Strong understanding of electronic engineering fundamentals.
  • Proven experience in high-speed digital design and signal integrity principles.
  • Demonstrable track record of digital circuit design and development.
  • Strong hardware debugging and fault-finding skills using oscilloscopes, logic analysers, power supplies and multimeters.
  • Experience using industry-standard schematic capture and PCB design tools.
  • Degree-qualified in Electronic Engineering or a related discipline.
  • UK nationality and the ability to obtain UK security clearance.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience supporting manufacturing and production environments.
  • Knowledge of Design for Test (DFT) and Design for Manufacture (DFM) methodologies.
  • Embedded firmware development using C, C++, Assembler or Python.
  • Development of software-based test solutions and test equipment.
  • Experience producing test specifications and conducting hardware and system-level verification.
