We have a great opportunity for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our growing team in construction, working on projects and product development that are advancing the built environment and revolutionising construction safety. We’re building things that haven’t been built before, and we need talented people to help us do it. This is a full-time role based in Christchurch, with flexible working options available. Key duties & responsibilities:
- Design based on mechanical first principles; kinematics, stress, displacement, friction, wear, and fatigue.
- Analysis of engineering designs with appropriate use of engineering calculation methods, FEA methods, and physical test insight.
- Interpret product requirements and specifications, identify gaps, and define clear technical inputs to drive engineering design.
- Experience in translating customer requirements into verified engineering designs.
- Creation of concepts and ability to assess concept feasibility to enable well-reasoned selection of suitable concepts for further development.
- Scoping, specifying and utilising testing activities as a core part of the design process an integral approach to engineering development.
- Learning through observation and root cause assessment.
- Undertake design development activities in a well-structured and coordinated way, considering system interaction and decision consequences of technical, product, and commercial choices.
- Learning-first approach in development activities; identification of knowledge gaps and building understanding and insight through research - literature, test, experimentation, and collaboration.
- Compiling and completing clear and accurate engineering design documentation suitable for review, knowledge capture, and future reference.
- Actively participate in design reviews, from initiation through to completion.
- Ability to develop system understanding clearly and quickly; identify and communicate gaps in their understanding and develop pathways to understanding.
- Expert humility; recognizing when you don’t know or understand, communicating with honesty, and reaching out for help with openness.
- Clarify context when it is not clear.

- Proficiency in the use of CAD & FEA tools.
- Responsible for leading and developing a small team.
What you’ll bring to the team:
- Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering or similar, or proficient practical experience.
- Ideally 8+ years' experience in a relevant engineering role.
- Ability to lead and manage small engineering project and product development teams.
- First-hand experience in building and evaluation of prototypes, and use of prototyping in engineering design.
- Experience in the appropriate selection of materials, defining geometry, and applying dimensional tolerances (GD&T).
- A practical understanding of designing for manufacture and providing support throughout the production process.
- Understanding of cost and manufacturing impact from design process in fabrication, moulding, casting, machining, etc.
- Experience in creating code-based tools to solve engineering problems or automate engineering tasks.
- Integration of sensing and electrical elements and systems to enable system functionality.
