JOB DESCRIPTION

Time-served HVAC Pipefitter/Welder with a recognised apprenticeship and proven experience delivering commercial and industrial mechanical services installations.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong technical, organisational and supervisory abilities, with extensive experience in the installation of HVAC pipework systems, plantroom installations, LTHW, CHW, DWS, Steam & Condense as well as associated mechanical services.

The role requires the ability to work from drawings and specifications, coordinate trades, supervise operatives, apprentices and subcontractors, and ensure installations are delivered safely, efficiently and in accordance with programme and quality requirements.

The role will involve working across a range of projects including NHS healthcare, education, commercial offices, pharmaceutical, industrial, MOD, data centre and public sector environments throughout Scotland, with potential for UK-wide projects.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Supervise pipefitters, welders, HVAC engineers, apprentices and subcontractors.
• Lead day-to-day mechanical installation activities.
• Coordinate labour resources and work activities.
• Order materials ahead of requirements to ensure efficiency.
• Ensure adherence with company rules including timekeeping and operatives breaks.
• Allocate work in accordance with programme requirements and project priorities.
• Monitor productivity, quality of workmanship and progress.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to site personnel.
• Liaise with Project Managers, Engineers, Main Contractors and other trades.
• Attend coordination, planning and progress meetings.
• Promote a positive health, safety and quality culture.
• Lead by example in all aspects of professionalism and site conduct.

Technical Responsibilities

• Read and interpret construction drawings, schematics, P&IDs and specifications.
• Understand HVAC and mechanical services systems and associated installation requirements.
• Ensure installations comply with drawings, specifications and project standards.
• Identify design, coordination and buildability issues and elevate accordingly.
• Assist with technical queries and RFIs.
• Carry out setting out and measurement of mechanical services installations.
• Assist with material take-offs and procurement requirements.
• Identify labour, plant and equipment requirements.
• Inspect incoming materials and plant deliveries.
• Ensure correct installation methodologies are followed.
• Supervise welding activities and ensure compliance with approved welding procedures.
• Monitor pressure testing, flushing, water treatment and commissioning activities.
• Support Project Managers with technical and commercial information, including delays, variations and additional works.

Maintain a zero-harm approach and ensure all HVAC and mechanical installation activities are carried out safely and in accordance with company and project requirements.

Deliver high-quality installations right first time, minimising defects, rework and snagging.

Ensure allocated works are completed in accordance with project programmes and key milestones.

4. Productivity

Ensure labour and resources are effectively managed to maximise productivity and efficiency.

5. Technical Compliance

Ensure all installations comply with project specifications, standards, manufacturer recommendations and applicable regulations.

6. Coordination

Work closely with all MEP disciplines and principal contractors to minimise clashes, disruptions and delays.

7. Documentation

Ensure all quality, testing, commissioning and handover documentation is completed accurately and on time.

8. Team Development

Support and mentor apprentices, trainee pipefitters and junior engineers.

9. Client Satisfaction

Maintain professional relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors and stakeholders throughout project delivery.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

• Strong HVAC and mechanical services background.
• Excellent pipefitting and welding skills.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
• Strong understanding of HVAC systems and mechanical plant installations.
• Knowledge of LTHW, CHW, PHW and process pipework systems.
• Strong setting-out and coordination skills.
• Ability to organise and supervise labour resources.
• Good understanding of construction sequencing and project delivery.

QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

• Recognised apprenticeship in Pipefitting, Heating & Ventilating or Mechanical Building Services.
• SVQ/NVQ Level 3 Mechanical Engineering Services (Pipefitting) or equivalent.
• Relevant CSCS, SJIB or ECS trade card.
• Proven experience delivering commercial and industrial HVAC installations.
• Welding qualifications relevant to role with a minimum TR5 standard MMA
