About the Department

Hampshire Trust Bank has a strong growth forecast for the years ahead, having achieved strong growth over recent years, and becoming a data‑driven business is identified as a key success criterion for achieving those forecasts on a cost‑effective basis. The Bank is investing in becoming a data‑driven business and is in the process of migrating to a new data platform, comprising of a Snowflake data warehouse, Tableau reporting and analysis platform, and a new data governance operation. As a result, we are seeking a new Data Engineering Lead to own the data delivery, whilst managing a small team of Data Engineers. The Data Engineering Lead will work effectively across teams (Data, BI, Architecture, Tech) to align on delivery and platform direction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the design, development, and maintenance of enterprise‑grade data pipelines across the Snowflake data warehouse, ensuring reliability, scalability, and adherence to industry best practices.
  • Lead innovation in ETL/ELT, data orchestration, CI/CD, and automated testing approaches, introducing modern tooling and methodologies to enhance the Data Platform.
  • Define and enforce engineering standards, including coding conventions, testing frameworks, version control practices, and data modelling guidelines.
  • Manage and develop a team of Data Engineers, providing coaching, technical leadership, mentoring, and structured upskilling programmes to elevate capability across the team.
  • Make key technical decisions relating to data integration strategies, performance optimisation, platform tooling, and development lifecycle processes.
  • Oversee the operational reliability of data pipelines, ensuring SLAs/KPIs for data freshness, quality, and availability are met consistently.
  • Collaborate with the Lead Data Architect, Business Analyst, BI Delivery Lead, and cross‑functional teams to translate business needs into robust engineering solutions.
  • Manage resource allocation and prioritisation for data engineering workstreams, balancing delivery demands with technical improvements.
  • Support platform governance and compliance, including GDPR‑compliant data processing, secure data handling, and alignment with enterprise architectural standards.
  • Drive continuous platform evolution, identifying opportunities to automate, modernise, simplify, and scale the Data Platform in line with business growth.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience in a senior or lead data engineering role within a modern cloud data platform environment.
  • Strong hands‑on experience with Snowflake data warehouse design, performance tuning, and data modelling.
  • Expertise in modern ETL/ELT tooling and workflow orchestration (e.g., Airflow, dbt, Matilion, or similar).
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and Git‑based development.
  • Strong experience with SQL, Python, and data transformation best practices.
  • Background in building, maintaining, and improving scalable enterprise data platforms.
  • Experience leading, coaching, or mentoring data engineers.
  • Leadership mindset with a focus on capability building and team progression.
  • Strong communicator capable of translating complex technical concepts for non‑technical audiences.
