We’re looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Funding Accountant to join our finance team in Blyth. This is a key role within the business, supporting the management of a diverse portfolio of grant-funded projects while ensuring strong financial control and compliance with funding regulations.

Working closely with the Funding Manager and colleagues across the organisation, you’ll play an integral part in protecting the organisation from financial risk, including potential funding clawback. You’ll build relationships with project managers, external stakeholders, and auditors, becoming a trusted partner in delivering successful, compliant projects.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Take ownership of the financial oversight of grant-funded projects, ensuring that all activity adheres strictly to funding guidelines.
  • Prepare and submit grant claims, carefully analysing supporting evidence such as labour costs, invoices, expenses, and bank statements.
  • Work alongside project managers to ensure that milestones, outputs, and KPIs are met, while also supporting budget forecasting and quarterly reforecasting activities.
  • Interrogate financial data to maintain accurate records and identify any risks or discrepancies early.
  • Work with external auditors and funding bodies, responding to queries and ensuring audits run smoothly and efficiently.
  • Reconcile project finances within the accounting system, prepare revenue journals, and support cash flow forecasting to ensure funding is received promptly.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of funding processes as the organisation grows, helping to strengthen controls and ways of working.

About You

  • 3-5 years’ experience in an accounting or finance role.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interrogate and interpret data.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to prioritise workload and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong Excel skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with core accounting principles (accruals, prepayments, P&L, balance sheet).
  • Experience working with grant-funded projects.
  • Knowledge of revenue recognition.
  • Exposure to audit processes.
  • Experience with SAGE or similar accounting systems.
