The Role: Holland & Barrett is currently shaping a 3-year transformation plan – the kind that touches every part of the business and can’t be delivered by good intentions alone. What that means in practice is a portfolio of complex, high-stakes programmes that need shaping and delivering to drive maximum value. We need someone who can work with senior leaders, make sense of strategic intent, and turn it into a highly effective portfolio of projects and programmes.
This is a rare opportunity to work at the intersection of strategy and execution, with genuine visibility across the most significant change happening in the business. You'll shape programmes that matter, influence decisions at the highest level, and build a portfolio of work that would take years to accumulate anywhere else.
What you’ll actually be doing:
- Work directly with senior leaders to challenge, shape and translate strategic ambition into coherent, prioritised programmes of work with real structure behind them.
- Own the programme architecture – defining workstreams, sequencing, governance, resource requirements and dependency management across complex, multi-strand initiatives.
- Collaborate on the development and refinement of business cases, working with Finance and business stakeholders to articulate scope, investment, risk and expected value through to approval.
- Maintain an aerial view across multiple initiatives, keeping dependencies, risks and sequencing actively managed and ensuring nothing falls through the gaps between programmes.
- Lead, coach and develop a team of 2–4 Project and Programme Managers – setting direction, removing blockers and raising the standard of delivery without owning every detail day to day.
- Work horizontally across the organisation – Finance, Technology, Change and functional business leads – to ensure programmes are well-governed, commercially grounded and land properly in the business.
How we’ll see your impact:
- Complex strategic priorities are structured into programmes that are clear, executable and aligned to business outcomes from the start.
- Business cases are well-constructed, commercially robust and move through investment forums without unnecessary friction.
- The portfolio has genuine delivery confidence – risks visible, dependencies managed, escalation timely.
- Programme and Project Managers in your team are measurably better for working with you.
What you’ll need:
- A strong track record of leading complex, multi-workstream programmes in fast-paced environments – ideally retail or similarly demanding commercial businesses.
- The ability to operate at the intersection of strategy and delivery – comfortable with ambiguity at the top and rigour at the bottom.
- Senior stakeholder credibility – you can challenge constructively, facilitate alignment and bring people together around decisions without losing relationships.
- Commercial acumen sharp enough to shape and interrogate a business case, not just present one.
- Leadership experience – you know how to develop people and raise a team's performance without needing to control every deliverable.
